My rant about why you should pick a niche you are interested in.

    Hi Guys,
Thought it was about time to chuck another post in the clickbank section.

Now I understand the view of a lot of successful affiliate marketers that your interest in a niche should not stop you marketing other areas, and that the principle is to develop the skills to take apart any niche so if you can identify a profitable opportunity you can take it down pretty quickly.

But I think a lot of long term benefits can be gained by focusing on a niche you are truly interested in and knowledgeable about. Here is an example of the concept.

Lets say you pick a niche around one of your main interests that still has some good affiliate products. You can put a new blog together (or better still try to buy an older blog that is underutilised). Get some review posts on it, use your experience to attempt to rank these posts for highly profitable terms, and if you are successful, bam, you got some nice money coming in.

If you do this to a niche you are not interested in, your probably going to be more inclined to move on to another niche and replicate the formula, but lets say you have a deep interest in this niche, now that your monetizing, you can now start to build content on the blog. If you have been successful at ranking your review pages, your blog will have some juice flowing through it and some general G respect. As such, any content you write is likely to get a bit of long tail traffic. Sure this extra traffic will operate at a very low CPM but hey, your monetizing anyway is this is now about asset development.
Using this method, if you are adding authoritive quality content (because you are indeed interested and knowledgeable about the area) you may be successful in getting high quality authority links to content, or having some content go viral, ...

The ultimate goal is 2 fold:

    1. Take down affiliate marketing opportunities in your niche to monetize.

    2. Build an authoritive blog, that may be a big asset in the future if you are successful.

As an example, you may end up owning a pretty high traffic site if you do this successfully, but have still been monetizing your initial traffic at a high CPM to essentially pay for the further development of the asset (even if pay means paying yourself for your time). Additionally, if you are successful at becoming an authority, there may be monetization opportunities open up from this that could exceed the affiliate revenue, even if your taking a piece of most of the affiliate opportunities in your niche.

Of course the example of a blog can be replaced with similar concepts with other sorts of sites.

Anyway, there is my rant, so when you hear an affiliate marketer say you should be able to market any niche, and pure niche profitability and opportunity should govern your next move, just remember, at least in my opinion, there is another side to the story.

    Hope this helps.

The niche can't have low CTR. It's all about how you market it.

If you type "keyword" of course its going to have a low CTR. If you type "buy now long-tail-keyword" then you might see your CTR skyrocket.

You're making the assumption that there is money to be made in your niche. I saw an interesting story over at the Warrior Forum about this very topic. This lady was advised to do something that interests here. Well, she stayed in the area of cleaning up dog messes.

I know you're trying to illustrate is that if you do what you like, you're less likely to quit. You're actually more likely to quit when you're not getting any results.

I love my niche because it has what I call "Sub-categories" in which I can market it in more than one way.

    Hey Supper,

Yeah, I’m not so much talking about having to focus on a sub niche of a sub niche that is exactly your interest. But lets take the example of someone who’s dying passion is cleaning up dog mess (man, I must check out that area :) ).

Obviously, that’s not going to be profitable. So then lets go dog mess cleaning -> dogs.

Ant then let’s go dog mess cleaning -> dogs -> pets. Now we have a bit more of a reaslistic niche that is still in line with our interests. Lets check out the niche pets.

Quick search of the marketplace and I’m seeing a few products with gravity: approx 110, 57, 21. Okay, there is a start. Lets do a quick keyword analysis on:

“Kingdom of pets”: 880 monthly search volume
“sit stay fetch”: 1600 search volume $4.41 Exp CPC
“Sitstayfetch” 1600 search volume: $3.68 Exp CPC.

OK, there is a start, let’s load up cj. Oh well, “The Account Manager is unavailable at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience.”, Let’s not load up cj, but I do remember seeing sites for physical dog meds, and there are probably other physical pet related stuff stores in cj. Can maybe move into flea control, ...

So if we were able to rank for good terms, I reckon they are indeed opportunities out there for this niche with a bit of searching.

I’m not so much coming from the angle of trying to prevent a noob from giving up, but more, assuming to can successfully exploit affiliate opportunities in your nich, by having an interest, you may be able to break into the next stage of getting a high traffic authority site after piggybacking on your initial affiliate marketing opportunities in your niche.

For example, quick KW analysis: Some of the major terms are “dogs”, “pets”, “cats” (I guess that would have been pretty obvious).

Now a quick search on the term “pets”: some of the top entires have alexa: 47K, 11K, 3K.

I am talking about the potential to use the start of your G respect obtained from ranking your affiliate pages, to build an asset that is getting closer to this sort of thing. Here you interest and knowledge in the area is going to give you a big advantage to break your site to a next level.

It’s all about opening up possibilities for the next move in your sites, with the benefit of interest and knowledge of the topic to support whatever that move may be.

    :)
