Verizon blocking web sites and servers?

I've heard of blocking for spam, but to block an entire server/ IP address seems wrong. I have done the white list thing three times already. I have been unblocked two of those times and now I'm back on their block list without it being even two days.

Are they even allowed to do this? Shouldn't there be like a privacy law that states they can not filter what their users do such as if they browse my hosting site www.fireballhost.com ? I don't see any reason for this blocking. If it isn't spam then what is it? Its not me because I don't use Verizon (thank goodness ATT doesn't pull a stunt like this), and its definitely not my server because, just about anywhere else you can pick it up. Verizon is the only one that currently blocks me that I know of.

Do you think I can sue them or would it be possible to start like a class action lawsuit? I'm sure I am not the only one who has suffered through this whole stunt they have been pulling. I even called them up and they said "their tech support is currently closed" while one of my clients called up and got right through. Ridiculous!

I think you need to keep trying to work it out with Verizon. I don't think you have legal grounds to sue them. They provide a service to their customers and are under no obligation (at least to you) to not block your ip - just like google doesn't have to index you or rank you in any particular order. There has to be a reason they are blocking your IP - are you sure one of your customers isn't sending out spam to a Verizon user, who in turn, keeps reporting it to them? Even if you had grounds to sue them, it could run hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees - and I doubt you'll find a law firm that is going to start a class action suit - especially without proof that this practice is baseless and widespread.

I'm going to try and work it out again tomorrow and see if they can at least help me as to why I keep getting blocked. I could understand blocking an IP from sending mail, but from end users to visit web sites using this IP isn't what I would consider a defense against spam. In fact I don't think blocking the sites would do anything beneficial to Verizon themselves. They already blocked the IP from sending mail, why bother blocking the IP so nobody can surf the web on these web sites?

    Hi Stroh,

You problem cannot be solved by Tech Support online. Problems like these will be handled by our operations support center and it usually took around 6 hours to get settled. I advised you to call between 8am to 5 pm EST...

I plan to call, I know what I'm gonna say and I'm going to get this problem resolved once and for all, who knows maybe Verizon will cooperate and help me fix the issues effectively so that people can breathe easier.

    UPDATE:
Shame, I called them up, and guess what the person told me. "Verizon does not block IP addresses, call your ISP if you are having problems."

Oh yeah my ISP, ATT is having problems . I don't know who the person at Verizon was to think that there is no such of a thing as whitelisting or blacklisting in Verizon's policy.

Oh well, I'm on their whitelist now because a few of my customers decided they would help and called up Verizon and chew them out. Guess something clicked somewhere cause it works now for them.

So in the end case solved, just have to be a customer of theirs to get anywhere.
