Free directories work very good for me, use keywords on the site's title and the brief description. My experience is that when searching, the results start popping up on google as part of the directories and after 2-3 weeks aprox the site itself appears on the first positions. Use a some blog commenting too to boost the ranking

    good luck!

Hmm so its really a 50/50 thing then since most users disagree and some agree works well for some and dont for others.

Yes. that's right.. you have to keep in mind that the 50% for which it doesn't work are either doing it incorrectly or they are in a competitive niche and directory submission is not enough to boost their SERPs.

Please post some proof related to these claims.

I have sites with backlinks from only directories, and they rank pretty well for their keywords. Granted they are not in competitive niches, but they hold their own...

Well after reading this thread all I gathered is that people are unsure about the worth of submitting to directories. Seems that like many things in life, there is no sure answer. SEO is an art, not a science?

pr doesn't matter, the only things that matter is the backlinks you may get from submitting to directories.

    Hello,
With some directories like Dmoz, Yahoo, business, bow, and a couple of more, you will get some traffic and you will get some boost in Search Engine...

Yeah i managed to gather that the bigger directories that it is harder to get into can help but the regular directories dont really help.

I'd really like to see the proof that Google penelizes for too many directory submissions. Because then I will start submitting for the competition right away!!
Anyway, if you read the Google Webmaster Guidelines, you will see that they recommend you to do directory submissions.
google knows that directories are formed by human editors. And besides that fantastic computer system and algorithm, they like to have a whole team of human reviewers voting for a site or not. For free!!! This is why these directories will always keep some importance.

As for submitting 1000 at once or 10 a day. It doesn't really matter. Directories need somewhere between 2 days and 6 months to review your site. It is not like you are going to gain all those links in a single week. Instead they will be spread over many months.

I do recommend to do like 500 at the time, max. Just so that you can see the results and change your strategy, titles etc, before you run out of directories.

Directory submissions work very fine for me. But I prefer to do it myself or else from a really good service (I guess I can't mention any) rather than just throw away money

I just started up my e-commerce site over a week ago. I think I am going to start submitting to directories at a rate of 20 per day and I will see how that plays out. How do you check your success rate?

Remeber, more opportunities to have people click on your link from link directories= more traffic.

The problem I have found is that if you want to use free directory submission, then they want you put their link in your tags, which can clog the crap out of your website.

I don't think i've ever seen a single hit from any non-major directory i've ever submitted to. I almost think it's a waste of time (as you can get backlinks a *LOT* easier using other methods).

Anyone know of some REAL non-search engine traffic generating ideas? Not just links. I've got lots of links.. I want traffic.
