Well everyday it seems my site is in a new place for a certain keyword. When i started SEOing for the keyword it was on page 8 then about 4 days later it was on page 1. Ever since then it jumps from page 6,7,8 to page 1 every 12 hours or so. It keeps moving up on page 1 and is now in the top 3 but it wont stay there for more then 12 hours. How do i get it to stay?

SEO is a waiting game. How long has your keyword been jumping like this? The SERP's probably have not fully updated since you worked on the keyword.

sounds like what's been referred to as the "google dance." one of my sites does that but it's more of a jump within a range of 10 spots from page 2 to page 3 and vice versa.

I think it solidifies a little more with older sites. It happened to me once, and then went away. Now it only jumps around like 3 or 4 spots instead of 3 or 4 pages. SEO = Sometimes Effective Optimization

"The Google Dance" hahaha I love it. I mean I'd heard of the "google sandbox" but never the google dance. Great stuff.

This is something that usually happens with newer sites, if you continue to build backlinks
as your site ages your position in the serps will become more stable.

Like the other guys said... the older the site the less that will happen. I've had that happen for certain keywords and pages and I'm not seeing as much fluctuation on my older stuff.

Better let your site indexed/cached more often by getting strong backlinks so you have good chance to secure the high position.

The Google Dance refers to when Google indexes are updated. This period of time often results in fluctuations in the index size and some noticeable changes in search engine result positions. FYI. ;)

It will just take a little while for the site to be established and settle at a certain position. Keep working on it and you will get it to stay in a good position! :)
