I was told by my webhost that I should submit my site to Google once a week. Is this true? or is it only because my site is new..

There's never a need to submit to Google, just ensure that you have links coming in from sites that are already showing up in Google's search results

You can submit as many times as you want. It's completely useless though.
If you want to get your site indexed it's a much better idea just to build a couple of nice links and wait a few days.

It is not true. There is no need to submit in any search engines. You site will be crawled once you put webmaster and analytic code in to your site.

There's no need to submit your link regularly to google! Once it was submitted, you just need to wait for few days (maybe) for it to be crawl and index.

Even Google don't recommend that you submit your site to google - at all, let alone once a week

"you don't even need to submit your site to Google. Google is a fully automated search engine that uses software known as "spiders" to crawl the web on a regular basis and find sites to add to our index. In fact, the vast majority of sites listed in our results aren't manually submitted for inclusion, but found and added automatically when our spiders crawl the web."

Don't submit to Google frequently, it may block ur site. U have to submit ur site only once. It will index ur site...

It can take up to 2-8 weeks before your website will be indexed by Google properly! However, high quality incoming links, XML sitemap implemented into your website and manual website submission to search engines can really speed up this procedure!

I think there may be a confusion here.

Submitting the web site's URL to Google's Site Submission page (http://www.google.com/addurl/), Yahoo's, and MSN's is needed only once. But it is better to let them "find it" from another site.

Submitting the web site's list of URLs (i.e. XML Sitemap) is something else. This should be done weekly to tell the SEs what has changed or been added. The submission of the XML sitemap is handled thru Google's Webmaster Tools and is extreamly important to new site.

Just setup a Webmaster Tools account for Google and use "gSiteCrawler" to create the xml sitemap. It is free, works, and handles very large sites.

Seven years ago someone told me that in order to get great rankings, you should submit every page of your site to google on a daily basis. At that time it was a joke already, and I'm still laughing about it.
It amazes me that now, in 2008, people still give out this weird advice.

You don't know Google? Well, Google surely knows you!!

    Google gives the following adice:
