    Hi

if i was looking to redesign a website, which already has 1000+ pages in the google index, what the best way of telling google that the 1000+ links in its index are about to be axed and a whole new structure added.

Would google be happy with just a new sitemap? would this affect a sites page rank in a good or bad way? and view on this subject would be good.

    many thanks

Google will eventually change all it's indexed url.

What could be nice for you, is that any 404 errror redirect automaticly to your homepage, so you dont loose traffic.

In Google Webmaster Tools go to the Tools menu and choose Remove URLS

is there not a better a way to remove over 1000+ pages, even doing it by folder it could be a lot of work. and the big question is still will all this have a good or bad effect on page rank etc or is it down to page content being better or worst?

The site i am talking about is over 11 years old so has a very good ranking with google, and i am keen not to upset google, and loose ranking

When we had to change the directory structure of our site (which is essentially the problem you're facing) we did:

    301 redirects
    XML sitemap

Lost a few rankings on a few of the internal pages but they came back a couple weeks later.

Hope you have the same success. :)
