What is optimal number of article directories to submit an article to?

Some webmasters submit one article to few hundreds or thousands of article directories.
Some webmasters disagree with this approach and say that one article should only be submitted to one or a few article directories only.

So in your opinion, how many directories should one article be submitted to?

I favour the one article to a select few directories approach. While submitting to hundreds of directories in the past has generated loads of links for me (according to Yahoo SiteExplorer), I found that only a small number ever actually appeared in Google Webmaster Tools so I've tended to focus on those directories first (list below) and only submit beyond this list if I have time.

I submit my articles to select top five directories because they send the maximum number of visitors to my site and they are counted as baclinks by google which include ezine, buzzle, articlebase, goarticles etc.

How does articlebase count as backlinks? They add rel="nofollow" to all external links. Is the traffic from there good? Cause I considered it a waste since you don't get a PR back link from it.

I usually submit my articles to hundreds of directories through an article submission
service and I'm very happy with the results.

True, articlesbase itself is nofollow but if someone republishes the article from there, the link text in the html they provide is dofollow. Of course there's nothing stopping the person using the article to add nofollows but that applies no matter where they get the article from.

my opinion is not to be submitted on more then 7. always submit on high PR- article.
content might be duplicated issue if someone goes to huge article directories, and engines will not weightages.

I normally only distribute an article to around 5-10 places. and if article will be on your site too, make sure its posted on your site first.

    HI,

We went and searched all the sites out there and put together about the best 100 sites that actually help. The sites approve the links gradually so it looks all natural to google.

Article submissions actually serve 2 purposes

    1) Get you backlinks from diff c class IP
    2) Push your keywords higher in search engines

    Ciao

Yes, I have found that one of the MOST important parts of submitting an article to directories is to make a page somewhere on your site that you know gets indexed regularly, and add your article to your site before you submit it to any directories. As soon as it is indexed on your site by BOTH google and yahoo, then go ahead and submit it to the directories. That way, no one else ends up getting search engine "credit" for getting it indexed before you. Always make sure your original content is indexed on your pages first!

Excellent info...and sorry for the long post in reply!

I'm thinking of starting an 'article spinning' service through software which I've developed myself.

I've developed two pieces of software so far.

The first requires the writing of an article, + up to 2,3,or 4 different copies, 10, 20+ different titles, 10+ resource boxes, sets of keywords etc. The software then mixes them up and automatically submits to each article site (300+). The result is a completely readable, logical article that is different from every other.

I've tested the software once - and got 2 complaints out of the 300, saying the article was a duplicate.

Initially, my site was ranked above 500 in Google for a competitive keyword. Two weeks later it had moved up to around 90. A short time later 14. Then it hovered around 3/4.

The second piece of software comes from a different angle. Basically, you look for words or short phrases throughout the article and make a list of substitutes (making sure any word, when substituted, makes sense in the context of every sentence). Therefore, each article is uniquely different, too. However, submission to each site (about 20) is manual.

So which is best? Mass submission (albeit 'different' articles), or submission to the top 20 sites. At this point, I don't know.

Now, maybe I should design a THIRD piece of software, combining BOTH of the above. When I've done so (if I do so, that is), I'd like to test it all for free (maybe five people). I'd be interested to know what you all think.

I believe automation is what we are looking for these days. Something that would reduce time and efforts. I'd like to try out the software when you are done with it :)
