OK - Is it necessary to get into dozens and dozens of directories after I launch my site? Or better to list it in a handful. Say 12 or 15? In essence, will being in over a hundred mean anything as opposed to being in 12 or 15? Lemme hear ya...

all depends on the quality of the directory
one quality link could be equal to hundreds of low quality ones

Thanks Discover. So then, what handful of free directories offer quality links? Aside from DMOZ I mean...

keep submitting, since its a new directory, you'll know which are quality ones and which are low quality ones when you submit to more and more directories...
limit it to 100 or 150 for the first month, and don't forget the other ways of promotion. Everything works, but the momentum depends on your interest.

All I see are directories requiring reciprocal links.....I'm trying to get into directories offering a free listing. Aside from DMOZ and the several dozen other 0 to 1 PR sites, are there any reputable directories? I did submit to www.jayde.com which is fantastic....VEERRY easy to submit to and those guys are PR6. So many others are simply junker sites. If you or anyone else know newly updated, free (no recip) directories, can you point to a link where there is a list?
Last winter during Feb & March....every day all day long I hand submitted my set of new sites. Out of 250 directories I submitted to, about 90 accepted me. I recently back-tracked through those 90 or so, and some are already non existent or changed their policies whereby my sites I had accepted, were dropped for paying sites.
On the other hand,, I'm terrified of paying to have them submitted automatically for fear the big G would ban them for ranking too fast from the automated listings that would start appearing. As mentioned, no sense in mentioning DMOZ to me. That directory has since become a joke, many of the sites in there are also obsolete whereby you click on certain URLs & get the proverbial 404 page error etc.
I don't want to buy backlinks either....another no-no. So any other directories you can mention would be appreciated.

jayde.com is the crappiest directory of directory world. although its easy to submit and though it has high pr, it adds very less value to your seo.
