During the Olympics I guess we'll be hearing the Chinese and American anthems a lot - so which country, in your opinion, has the best one? I'm British but I have not hesitation in saying that our anthem (God Save The Queen) is an absolute fucking DIRGE and I wish we had something a bit more uplifting. My personal favourites, in order, are: 1 - France (Marseillaise) 2 - America (Star spangled banner) 3 - Ireland (The Soldier's Song) So what's yours, and do you think any other country has a better one?
The german is funny. Reminds me of WWII films I don't think they use god save the queen in the olympics as its the UK, not just England. I dont mind our English national anthem though. What happens when the queen dies? They change it to king?
Believe it or not Michael our sovereign lady Queen Elizabeth II is head of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other Realms and Territories (I knew that parchment would come in handy one day). Not just England. What do they teach at school nowadays?! Edit: Yes, when the Queen dies (hopefully no time soon) it will become God Save the King.
Never mind the Anthem. i like the good looking young women they pay to come sing it at the start of an event
I personally like La Marseillaise (France), Majulah Singapura (Singapore), Advance Australia Fair (Australia), and of course our own Lupang Hinirang (Philippines).
You're not alone - I hate it too, I remember being forced to play it on the recorder every morning at primary school. But I hate Advance Australia Fair much much more. I think Australia should have an AC/DC song as our anthem, at least we'd all know the words then.
Good question, I think I'll say 'melody' as a really good tune can cover up the most anodyne of sentiments - which lets face it most anthems are. They're either belligerent: "We're brilliant, we're class, We had a war and we kicked your ass!" Or syrupy, lachrymose and maudlin: "Oh my country you make me cry, When I think of your hills and your bright blue sky"
