I have operated several of my own forums and blogs over the years and they seem to be a great way to get traffic. Which is better in your opinion?

it really depends on how big the forum or blog is mate

forums usually get alot of traffic if theres many members and people are posting

Which is better? An apple or an orange.

This question depends on hundreds of variables.

For example DP forums is more popular than a DP blog would be on its own.

I am running a forum, and to increase its traffic, I am adding a blog to it. This way, members will have another reason to stay. You can think of it that way. Make a multi-content website, a blog, forum, directory, website, etc.

I think he meant forums hitting more traffic than blogs :)

I would agree in this case, however obviously it depends on various factors.

Forums tend to get more repeat traffic through members obviously.

But come on be a little more specific, it depends on the nice, the amount of members, if both things we are comparing are in the same market what market that is, if content is updated daily on both sites....

    It depends!

I think, when we say which is better, it depends on your purpose from the website, when we tak about the traffic, it also depends, I know some popular blogs that make tons of traffic, much more than some forums with hundreds of members.

From my experience, forums made me more traffic, but it was a lot of work, you know, moderating, communicating with ppl, and members, I found blogs more exciting personally, even with less traffic ;)

I don't get why people like blogs. Each blog I visit, I forget and I'll probably never return to it. I think you will get a lot more returning visitors out of a forum. Forums are just much harder to start, but once you get it rolling I think it is a million times better than a blog.

I believe people is now more encouraged to visit blogs than forums because a blog is an easy going for post about just anything anywhere.

Forums require a certain structure and enough members to keep them running, blogs can do it even without posters.

Blogs are good at $$ and Forums are good at Traffic.

    Just my first thought.

I think forum is better because:

    1) Once you are a member and you have communicate with other members, you somehow could not quit...you always want to keep in touch.

    2) In contrast, blogs you can unsubscribe anytime if it bores you. In order words if you own a blog and you do not know any interesting topic to glue your subscribers to your blog, then they will leave.

Unlike forum, once your member enter and find variety of fun topics, they will start to read..and communicate with others

It really depend on your writing skills. (just my 2 cents)

both are from very different category and different marketing strategies.

it's up to how you market it.

but if you are talking about organic traffic, i would say forums. posts in forums tend to rank better on SE because it's something new added and SE loves them.

blog however, needs exposure, and needs people to know that it exists.
