You can eliminate a lot of it by using the ban ip, domain and certain word features which are built into some scripts. If that is not working contact the scripts support area or an0n here on dp.

No need to delete the PR n/a sites.

Editing your directory based on the PR of a site is a very poor decision.

use banned word mod and you can ban the words used by spammers which will reduce spam submissions.

Couldn't agree more. Those sites you are deleting (not the spam ones, but the others) might make it big next update and you would be missing out.

Is your directory a free submit? I charge $1 for mine and that keeps 100% of the spam out :)

A paid directory will still get spam. Do you think robots care if they were supposed to visit paypal after submitting? ;)

    My 2 cents:

    1. Use captcha in your submit form. You can try recaptcha because other form of captchas are broken by many bots.
    2. Use some sort of session based authentication so that kids can't write scripts to spam your directory. They have to first visit a page, get the session cookies and have to send them while making the submissions.
    3. Making your directory paid doesn't help. Just search for directory spam on this forum and you will find a lot of bidding directory owners crying over spam submissions.
    4. Don't delete sites based on PR N/A that's plain and simple wrong.
