I am gonna bold this. Because this is what people need to take into consideration. People complain about Google a lot. And when a competitor tries to come up and put a fight, it gets bashed a lot.
Cuil doesn't really give me some new features i like, so i will not use it. At least not until they come up with something new
Don't see much competition "Don't fix what isn't broken" and why I probably will never leave Google unless something ridiculous comes up.
The first cuil result I clicked on tried to give me a virus, so that left a bad taste in my mouth. If a new search engine could just do one thing better than google, they could suck at other things and people would still give them a chance to improve. Msn used to be better at indexing new sites than google, so I would check over there every so often. Not anymore though...
I think cuil was released too soon. I've never seen an unfinished product released with so many problems. Does Apple ever release products that don't work? At worst, they offer a simple patch and the problem's solved.
Its worth quite a bit because there is so much hype about it. That puts the value up as there is more interest. Yes, its not very accurate and unless it gets better the hype will blow over soon and it will be forgotton. Thats unless they have massive amounts of money to spend on marketing.
How can anyone make the argument that "they are new, just give them time?" If that's the case, why did the attempt to make such a huge splash with their recent launch when their product is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E and has not improved since then? No one will ever take them seriously...
Judging by SERP's for a domain name search I ran, I'd say they have quite a bit of work ahead of them.
Good thing Thomas Alva Edison didn't feel as you do. http://en.proverbia.net/citasautor.asp?autor=12230
This whole argument that Cuil isn't better than Google is totally insane. Of course Google has better search results than Cuil, it's been around so long and is so dominant... Seriously, were you expecting Cuil to debut and in 1 week have better search results than Google? At least lets be realistic about this. The launch could of been better of course, but it's only a big of a flop as it's being made out to be if you're comparing to Google. Which is in part Cuils fault for using the whole 'former Google employee' angle, so you can't help but compare the two. I say it's worth in the millions, simply because of the hype and investment into it. If they hype dies down faster than Cuil improves, the value will decrease. That's my 2 cents anyhow.
But they're marketing it as a general day to day search engine so no matter what happens it will be compared with Google, the market leader. People won't switch just for the sake of it so it must be better for at least some people. I've not heard of anyone who's chosen to use it other then to see what the hype is about. If they can't compete on the main objective of a search engine (i.e good results) then they really need some other USP. Google when it first came out was a breath of fresh air not only because of the good results but the fact it's design was free of the crap that had infested yahoo, lycos et al. From what I can see cuil hasn't got anything new which isn't gimmicky. The drill down is nice but no different from the 'related searches' which have been about on other sites for ages. I'm guessing they were under pressure from investors to launch 'something' and so put out what they had rather then have funding pulled but if they have improvements up their sleeves then it was a bad decision and if they haven't then it's just snake oil.
Are their results even as good as gigablast? Actually, I'm much more likely to use gigablast since: * I root for the little guy * They don't steal images.
Hmm I'm actually starting to like it, try different searches. Plus Google has got to big so competition is healthy.
