I'm using nod32, don't like others because they are too intrusive.

You lost two laptops in a year Mokey? How so.. viruses? I've been trying to tell my mom to not stick with Norton any more simply because it takes up so much memory while running, but I didn't know it was also ineffective.

The best is probably that which is anti-virus, not all-in-one annoying application.

I have tried excellent antivirus that overtime cause system lags due to those addon patches (upgrades) trying to provide you with anti-spyware and anti-malware protection that other programs handle more efficiently.

Never.. EVER use McAfee or Norton. Ever. They slow your computer down and are not the best at finding and removing viruses. As people have suggested, get Kaspersky or Nod 32. Those are two of the best.

For free anti-viruses, I recommmend AVG or Avast! . But remember, you will always get better services if you pay for them, so those two will not be as good as Nod 32 or Kaspersky.

I am using Kaspersky and it does the job pretty well ... it has an issue with too many false positives though ..

I've heard the Kaspersky is one of the best. I've also heard good things about bit defender.

For Anti-Spyware I always use Spyware doctor, Adaware, and Spybot.

Avast stinks! In 2006 a virus got into my usb pen drive with the computer of a fried that used avast, when I inserted it into my computer (running an expired Norton 2004 with 2 year-old signatures) and still detected it when the updated avast didn't!

Anyway, I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security for experience... its even better than nod32 but it uses more system resources.
