No. Formatting will erase everything on your drive*.
The only thing you can do is move your directories to another drive, format, then move them back.

    *Kinda.

There's not to much to add :D

Installing xp will automatically format your drive. You can do a reinstall without reformating. However, always do a back-up first.

    *quite.
you should have a removable drive for BU anyway, buy one of those, move your files and then format the internal drive, move the files back :)

Amm I guess I have a solution although many of you will not like it. Install vista over XP. Vista always keeps older OS files intact and install itself place apart from that. Isnt this good?? But it is good for only those who like vista, not for others. :)

The flash drives are prone to corrupt. I have a couple go bad.

The best back-up is usb dual drive with a raid.

that's true, they wear out over time, tough trade off. I'd never use them for anything long term anyway :)

of course, burn it! :D I guess it all depends what you want to move though, if you have some killer files, movies or something, might not be able to burn to DVD

:D I didn't mean to burn it, but to use your HDD in 2 parts .. D: and C: as HDD and E: as a DVD driver for example :) So .. throw all the things on your D: part and format your C: part :p
