How do you rank for a Keyword?

Ok, i'm targeting one key term. Two words, my domain has these two words in, with one more unrelated word.

So what do i need to do to climb the google serps for that keyword?

Get links pointing to my site, with they kewords i'm trying to rank for


what else can i do, my site is new and nowhere for my main target keyword

I can't argue with all these people saying you need backlinks - but good onpage use of your keywords is also a big factor and shouldn't be seen as secondary - get your titles and headers sorted and and a decent keyword density - and use synonyms and natural context for your keywords, it helps.
