Actually no. Though, the proof of paid listings has been given in the form of completed transactions. The listed sites have remained private due the same rules that DMOZ itself holds up. So when such things (paid listings) DO happen on third party sites and editors come in and say that they do not, or that such sites are banned, then the tables have turned and the people pointing to the 3rd party sites are now the accused.

The FACT that there are completed transactions does PROVE that DMOZ has paid listings beyond a reasonable doubt.

So I say to anyone that is saying such things do not take place, or that when they do the sites are banned, that THEY are the ones that need to show the proof. The proof that such things do happen is on scriptlance in the form of completed freelance work for listings.

I for one have yet to see anyone bring forward any evidence that a listed site through such means has been removed from the directory...

I could name several. But I won't, because DMOZ would remove them.

That, of course, is the key to this silly conversation.

ODP doesn't knowingly permit editors to take money or services in kind in exchange for a listing. When there is evidence for an individual incident, the editor is usually canned and the website(s) blacklisted.

I've seen a number such incidents over the years but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that others haven't been detected.

[I expect Q will be along in a moment to whinge about the deal struck between Topix and AOL - which was nothing to do with ODP editors at all, as has been pointed out to him several times in the past]

It still points to sites being listed...

So to sum up... I can show that transactions have been completed to get PAID listings within the ODP, and all you can come up with is 'maybe they were removed'.

I certainly can not prove they were removed, but I do notice that you didn't say one way or the other... maybe that was just your way of pushing the topic aside? Then look, you go on and try changing the topic.

Sometimes I don't need to bring it up... you did a fine job of doing it yourself.

TOPIX is also not a paid listing, so is pretty moot in this thread. Though it DOES have something to do with editors... it was listed (thousands upon thousands of) times.

It's really odd that whenever things are not going the way editors want they change the subject in hopes to derail the conversation. Is that what you are doing here?

Nope, just trying to replace a silly conversation about things that neither of us can prove either way with some common sense. Is that a problem?

    hi rob;

I know you hate from me like the other dmoz editor because of i wrote

    * there are so many spam web site
    * dmoz has become paid directory

you & all the dmoz editors know both thinks that i wrote is REAL.

i have reported one spam web site 15 months ago (i say 15 months, not 15 days) but that spam web site is still exist on dmoz. how can you explain it?

but dmoz editors have time to curse me . one of the dmoz editors has give me red rep with "Hey asshole, everyone heard you the first time. Problem is you're a fucking moron so nobody cares." comment. dmoz editors have time to curse me but they have no time to check spam web sites on dmoz.

if you have time to curse or make fun of me, dmoz can editors can have time to check spam on dmoz (abuse reports).

i'm sure any of the dmoz editors can reply this. because they have nothink to say.

Whilst I agree the tone of that rep message is idiotic, how do you know it was from a Dmoz editor? I do agree with the gist of it, that every time I see your name I know what I'm going to read. I think you should either really get into proving your theories and post something to show your findings, or find a new hobby ;)

If you think a joke I aimed at someone else days ago means I "hate" you... you have issues far graver than a dmoz listing. That said, I don't edit there, cant help you.

If DMOZ cared about cleaning up it's reputation, all they would have to do is go to Sitepoint, getafreelancer, etc and pay for the links. Once those links are placed, fire the editors in question and make it publicly known.

you can read http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=938489 what i live with that spam directory. you must spent a bit time to read what i say. if you read that thread. dmoz editors allways NOTHINK on that thread.

on the other side , i do not curse the people but dmoz editors does it to me. WHY? because i write the real thinks about dmoz.

you can also check scriptlance or getfreelance to buy dmoz listing.

do not they you show somethink about the corruption about dmoz?

there is also more known example with shoemoney web sites. did you read http://www.shoemoney.com/2007/08/26/dmoz-extortion/ .

you can understand what i mean , if you want.

and this is not not hobby. the thinks that i wrote is real;)

if you need to make fun of somethink, you can use dmoz for this.

because any of the dmoz editors can explain, why

    * a spammy web site stays on dmoz for over 15 months. i have reported it over 15 months ago. (i'm still waiting for this but dmoz editors gives stupid answers for this)

    * there are so many listings about "buying dmoz listings" on scriptlance or getfreelaner or the other web sites (any of the dmoz editors can explain it. dmoz editors gives stupid answers for this too). shoemoney is also a more known example for this

i wonder which one of you (rob & syted) can explain those thinks without giving stupid answers or cursing me.

pls answer those . i'm waiting for your answers (if you have an answer:D)

As you've addressed me I'll provide the courtesy of a reply, but it won't satisfy you any more than what you've heard from others. Basically Syted covered my thoughts... your posts have a certain deja vu quality. It'd be hard to suspect you've engendered an urge for 'em to run out and add your site, so aside from venting an unhealthy rage I cant imagine what you're going to accomplish.

Pretty sure this forum isn't intended as a venue for you to dictate changes in their database. Never personally sat on a dead horse, but I have doubts that whipping it harder would make it get up and go. At this point it just comes across as trolling, so I'll let it go and leave it for the mods to deal with the repeated posts if they so choose. Just as it isnt your place to dicate to dmoz, I wont presume DP will do what seems to be the obvious answer here.

What amazes me is why the plug wasn't pulled on dmoz a long time ago.

It'll be a good day for the internet globally when google do the honourable thing and announce they will have nothing to do with it anymore, and then overnight it will become irrelevant and will dwindle away. It's a dinosaur long overdue it's extinction.

It just needs some real editors. The problem with the site is how out of date it is, and the fact that the legit editors can't keep up, and the other ones sell placement to the highest bidders

    @rob & styed:

first of all, i'm not writing repeated posts. do you think that i get tons of rep point with repeated post? i get those rep points because of i wrote the real thinks and helpful posts .

i'm asking a a diffent think but you (or the other dmoz editors) are writing a different think. just 2 simple question. those are as easy as a child can understand:D.

    1) i have sent an abuse report (about a web site which sent creates tons of pages with automatic queries) over 15 months ago but it has not been checked . why?

    2) how do you explain relation between shoemoney and dmoz ? http://www.shoemoney.com/2007/08/26/dmoz-extortion/ . it's one of the examples that dmoz editors are selling links. (you can also find tons of dmoz listing selling sites like scriptlance)

if you do not want to answer or have no answer, pls write it here.

And now that you have mazed your rep out you have green to waste?

Who said it has not been checked? Could it be that you are mistaken?

Your shoemoney example is invalid because Shoe has thus far refused to name names... anyone can come out and make a grand claim of corruption, but without going public with the information there is not much to be said about it.

Proof of corruption -> I paid to have Google listed in DMOZ and it's still there!

See, it just does not hold much water does it?

    @Qryztufre:
    1) i'm sure because i have the numbers of that abuse report. it's a long number mixed with numbers and letter. i have checked it. dmoz script says me "it has not been checked yet."

you can also see from dp thread or the other sites why the abuse report has not been checked.

dmoz editors are busy with selling links and cursing people.

    2) you have problems with my rep? robjones was saying that i was making repeated posts. i have showed him my rep points and i told him how i get them. i have only told him that i did not get these reps with repeated replies.

    3) (you have made the same think with rob. you understand what you want) . shoemoney is only one of the EXAMPLES as i said above. i was trying to tell about all dmoz listing selling sites. i do not care names. if you (or any dmoz editors) have an answer about the ALL ones, i will be glad to hear it.

    4) i hope google will take action to those spam directory

Again, your best bet is to go public with the information. If you have nothing to hide, then the truth will set you free!

Crystal balls & now cursing... heh, I'm amazed I don't have more editors at my occult forum *LOL*

I don't have any problem with your rep. It's a failed system here and is in no way shape or form a representation of the poster behind it. There is a member here with full bars, and many positive itrader that is still known for scamming members...

Shoemoney is NOT a very good example. Not even to those that are trying to shed the directory in a bad light. All he did was bark and showed no signs of biting. He could not back up his claims so that is a mark against him, not the ODP. If you want to get a mark against the ODP, you'll need to find a substantiated claim.

Have you reported them? If they get enough complaints they will look into it. So find their abuse report page and fill it out.

I agree with everyone wanted google to drop the DMOZ. It is a paid directory.. Well probably about a very small percentage paid.. but definately not clean enough for Google to use as the authority.

For anyone to name names is crazy. Especially if they are getting your links in there cause it would mean those links would go away along with the editor. And before anyone would even see the news story, the DMOZ would erase all tracks of this I would guess.

It's just greed that is in place here. I know most may start out as editors with good intentions. But let's say they need repairs on thier car done and get offerred a few k to approve a site. If that site meets their guidelines, who WOULN'T take that money and list it. I mean the site meets the standards.. and probably would make it in in the 1 to 2 year time it takes.. so why not fasttrack it?

It's funny hearing DMOZ defenders out there sticking their head in the sand to this problem. It is a problem and a major problem.....

Hell, I even have a post I placed here a few years ago and had a site that is still there listed for a price..:)

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=54385

Even got bad rep for posting this but was worth it as it has helped rank this particular finance related site. :)
