Bad news about a co-worker

Wow, my co-worker was having some bad problems with pain in the abdomen. She went to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. They said it was her gallbladder and that they needed to remove it. Everyone at work was just thinking "no big deal, they'll have it out and she'll be back to work in a week".

Unfortunately while they were in there they actually cut the duct going to her liver. They apparently didn't notice this, sewed her back up yesterday morning. Today they were wondering what was going on because she was having some odd symptoms. They ended up running some tests and discovered that everything she was eating and drinking was just pouring out into her body because the duct to her liver was cut. How ridiculous of a mistake is that?

They are transporting her to another hospital that has a liver specialist to hopefully repair the damage. At the moment though, her liver is not working at all.

OMG! She needs to sue the doctors. It wasn't just a little mistake but they made her life so miserable. That was a serious and major problem that needs an immediate respond.

Hope she gets well. Please keep us updated.

While it sucks that it happened I do not believe a lawsuit is the necessary response at every corner. A small cut can easily happen by mistake, to sue a doctor for every mistake simply makes health care cost a fortune for all and make doctors not wish to be doctors, second guessing every single move.

Should the hospital pay for the 'fix' to the situation? Yes I believe so, without a doubt. A lawsuit however does little if anything to actually help the patient or anyone for that matter.

I think a punishment is in order. Unfortunately, the only way you can really punish people these days is through money. My co-worker is likely to be off work with sub-par disability pay. She will likely have other bills and expenses aside from the surgery to correct it. While I don't think this is a million dollar lawsuit or anything, I do think that the mistake has other outside reprecussions that make a lawsuit necessary.

Yeah, it's not right to mess someones life and work up and get away with out some kind of recompense.
