The internet is being widely used by people around the world. There are so many sites being created daily and hence a lot of competition to get popular. I think you need to do some practical experiments to learn SEO many opinions regarding SEO are not proven and many things are right today and wrong tomorrow I never learned SEO from books and forums, it must be experienced
I think one of the benefits of SEO is to make your site more visible not just to search engines but also more accessible to visitors who are very much interested to your site's information or services.
