i've deleted over 1.000 pages from my website (which has 50.000 page).
On deleted page i've posted a message like "removed or not found page"

Are these pages treated as duplicate content now?

At 2 weeks after this operation my traffic dropped from 20.000 uniques/day to under 1000/day.. can this be the problem? was my website banned/penalized? how can i get my previously rankings?

what does it matter if they are treated as duplicates? surely you don't want them indexed anyway?

these pages was indexed but i've deleted them because there was casino/gambling/etc related..
now the google indexed around 50 pages with not found error message and the website looks like is penalized.. can be any connection between these 2 events?

if you redirect deleted pages to the main site it will be better
