Question: Should I learn ASP or ASP.NET??

I know asp and asp.net are not the exact same. i dont know anything about asp.net and very very little about asp. but before i spend time learning more... which would do you all recommend is better to learn for now?

ASP.NET of course
ASP is no longer recommended.
The latest version of of ASP.NET is ASP.NET 3.5. But there isn't much difference between ASP.NET 2.0 and 3.5, and since most web hosts support only 2.0 , there's no problem learning ASP.NET 2.0 as you can reuse the same code when you later migrate to 3.5.

Learn .net

I do legacy (old stuff) ASP code and there are fewer and fewer sites using it. Always go with the newer and proven technology

Yep, leave classic ASP learning for when you actually need to use it to work on an existing site or another situation where you have no choice. No reason to dig into it at this point unless you need to

 

Definitely learn ASP.NET. I programmed with ASP Classic for many years. But have have moved from classic ASP about 2 years ago and use ASP.NET strictly.

Classic ASP is just that, CLASSIC. Granted ASP Classic is a bit easier to learn, in my opinion, and it will help you a lot when you start learning asp.net, but if you only have the time to learn one of them, then I'll suggest going with ASP.NET

You should start learning asp.net with the language of your choice ( vb.net or C# ). Although VB.net will be easier to start if you are coming directly from classic asp.

Visual studio.net version 2005 and 2008 both are available for download as a trial versions also.. you can practice on those

I will suggest that ASP.Net is a much better option as Asp is now outdated and very few development is made in this and also we can say that Asp.net is some what the advanced version oF ASP.
As I have been working with ASP.NET using C# so Iwill suggest you the same . But if you have done VB then go for ASP.nET using VB although both are nearly the same.

Who wagers? My mind is always open for new thecnologies. But think about following. How many people have pure understanding today about how computer technology actually works? And everyday the quantity of such people becomes progressively smaller. One day there will be the situation when nobody will know how it actually works.

If ASP classic is the long way to home then i really want to forget the vbscript and all those ado/dao crap. definitely! In addition if you really thought that asp classic is the way to understand how the web really works then again i wish to forget that as soon as possible. You all speak here about asp classic like it's sort of low-level programing lol .. After all, we live in an age when unnecessary things are our only necessities.

 

I love classic ASP!! BUT ASP.net is much more powerful and can do tricky stuff in a few lines of code. This is the reason why dot net is popular. All the above members comments are valid but miss the important point I just mentioned.

 

Classic ASP is already an old technology. If you just start, then start with something new i.e. ASP.NET.

 

I was in same situation about a year back, I decided to go ahead with ASP .NET. I started with .NET 1.1 but I will suggest you to go for 2.0. Do not go for 3.5 because at this point of time there is no difference between 2.0 and 3.5. If you want then I can also suggest the name of book to be followed. let me know if you are interested?

I would recommend you to prefer asp.net to asp, as of now asp has now demand in the market compared to asp.net with c#.

So i recommend you Asp.net with C#
