I just negotiated a 50% discount for a featured link of the site in my sig in a well known quality paid directory. Would you negotiate on your listings prices?

In all honesty in principle nobody should - if they do, it just goes to show all existing featured link owners have been ripped off. Nonetheless, if I ever were to give a discount to a particular site, it'd be for a site I think would be useful for users of the directory which I hadn't come across yet.

Bad luck to the site owner - as I'd have given a listing for free if I liked the site content whenever I got round to finding the site. Which brings another point - there are literally thousands of sites that merit directory listings - however, the site owner may not know that SEO is required to gain ranking for a site in search engines, therefore the chances of a directory editor finding it are slim to none.

Verdict: Initially, no. But if both parties agree - sure, why not? It must be said if I received an e-mail asking for a discounted listing straight off, I'd say no without hesitation.

He first asked for the URL and then submitted it himself as a regular link which normally costs 50% of the featured price with no strings attached. I then asked to upgrade to featured and paid the difference. He wouldn't have accepted the site if he didn't approve it.

Depends. If I only got 1 featured submission a month, maybe so. If I got 5 a day, I wouldnt bother.

Last guy claimed they would do a banner for each directory for a free submission. :)

I wish we still had his email

hi malcolm1 i think i have the e-mail of the guy he invites me to Gtalk every 1-2 days,if you want it pm me. :)

As for the discount prices i wouldnt offer them to individuals only to seo companies and for a big number of bulk submmisions.

This is a good point. When an SEO company approaches you with bulk offers it can be a much harder decision to make.

    I have pretty simple approach.

I make discount for bulk submissions -- if asked.

Otherwise I only know about submissions when i receive payment notification in my e-mail:p

I don't barter with individuals only with serious SEO companies who agree long term / bulk deals.

I did have someone contact me after Google came out with their penalties... basically he used this to try and knock down my prices by 75% and then said that he would be happy to pay his 25% valuation of my service instead.

I politely replied and explained that even though Google had hit directories this unfortunately didn't reduce the amount of time I have to take to process submissions and therefore the prices wont be reduced.
