I've always wondered: how many customers/sites does your average well-known hosting company place onto a shared hosting server? And on a VPS/VDS server? When I've asked hosting providers they don't like to answer. I have this vague notion that on shared hosting the number of sites is in the 1000's. Maybe just 100's for VPS? Thanks.
With VPS you usually guarantee RAM, so you can never oversubscribe more RAM than the machine has available. Burst RAM is just a gimmick there. For overselling shared hosts, you can find about 1,000 domains on the same machine. This doesn't mean there are 1000 clients on the machine though.
OpenVZ allows you to sell more RAM you have available, Google the technology and you'll find the reason. We limit to 10 VPS nodes per Hardware node, although every come has their limits. Anything over 20, I'd say, will cause performance issues. Jay
With shared hosting it is hard to put a number on the amount of accounts goes on a server. as each host has different server specs and sets ups, and it more depends on the type of accounts that are put on a server.. for example all our shared hosting (and vps hosting) are on 8 core servers with 4-32 gb of ram.. they all have the same set up but different accounts i can not put the same amount on one server as i can another.. This all depends on the process that they use, and the resources that they use, you can put between 1-1500 accounts on a server it all depends on the type of accounts.. This is the reason why most hosts do not like to put a number on it as it really depends.. you can have 1000 accounts just sitting there with html pages and no mysql and do nothing to the server so there for you can put more on the server with out hindering the performance level.. this also goes for vps, the bigger the server and the more ram you have the more vps you can put on .. Jay is correct with open vz you can oversell the vps on the server. Hopes this helps answer your questions
most provider would say, 10-17.. but in the real world, in actually depends on the server load. from my current vps provider, they will just randomly add the vps into any physical server. assuming that the physical server has enough resources.
All depend on the server load, server hardware, how your vendor manages their servers. We provide both shared and VPS. - on some shared servers, we have around 50 accounts (on dual-core with raid-1 disks, 4GB RAM) - on some other we can have up to 100 account (on quad-core with raid-10 disks, 8GB RAM). - on our VPS node with 2x quad-cores CPU, 16GB RAM, RAID-10 SAS, we can put 15-30 VPS(s), depends on which plan customers want to use. - in other hand, we have a VPS node shares for 4 VPS only, but they are custom plans with more RAM and CPU. While limits at 10 VPS or less if your hardware still allows more? It's really different between vendors. If you want to compare, you will need to have all information: hardware, software, how they manage. Don't look at the number. It's just a marketing gimmick
Depends on the company but VPS's are usually limited to a minimum of 4-6 accounts per machine and can go up to 10-15. I believe 10-12 is the average and above this I would say it's shared hosting with root privileges
YOu have to know what the hard ware is .. you can not put a number on it, we have a few vps nodes with only 4 per node but those are the larger plans like gate2vn stated then we have 1 node with more as we the smaller 64 mb and 128mb of ram vps on.. all of our vps nodes are 8 cores with 8-32gb of ram on it so it all depends. you need to ask more then just the amount of vps are on the server. you need to find out the server specs, what size vps are on it and much more then just the amount..
Thanks, everyone, for the info and commentary. I'm not actually shopping around; were I though I understand the need to be much more detailed in comparisons. Instead I was just curious about the orders of magnitude at play here. Sounds like people agree that 1,000+ domains/customers (I know, I know, it's not quite a 1:1 ratio) isn't unusual for shared hosting at mega hosting providers. And it sounds like for VPS, "dozens" is the general ballpark -- maybe just 1 dozen or thereabouts, but "100's" is probably much too high for VPS. Good stuff to know. Thanks again.
What do you guys think, would buyers go for VPS on quad core server ( Q6600 ) with 8gb ram... Of course we would sell only 10-15 vps's on this server. ? Or everyone today want to be on dual quad core server ( yeah and trust me, providers with dual quad core, need to sell A LOT more then 15packages, just to cover their expenses, this mean same or less CPU then on my server. )
I have used shared hosting for years but ended up switching to a VPS ealier this year after dealing with way too many issues, mainly from too many sites on the same server, dont regret it either
