TBLISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Georgia's president said Friday that his country is under attack from Russian tanks and warplanes, and he accused Russia of targeting civilian populations as tensions over the breakway Georgian region of South Ossetia appeared to boil over into full-blown conflict. "All day today they've been bombing Georgia from numerous warplanes and specifically targeting (the) civilian population, and we have scores of wounded and dead among (the) civilian population all around the country," Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN in an exclusive interview. Saakashvili also said Georgian troops had shot down two Russian aircraft. Asked whether Georgia and Russia were now at war, he said, "My country is in self-defense against Russian aggression. Russian troops invaded Georgia." Russia's Channel 1 shows heavy tanks purported to be on their way to South Ossetia. http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/08/georgia.ossetia/index.html -- Now that's news
This is interesting... I wonder what NATO would do... Most probably it would do... NOTHING!! But why would Russians kill the break-away population's "Civilian Population"? Surely, if it a break-away region, it would be on the side of Russia. It could be propaganda. Ths Russian reason for attack??
i guess they thought it was better to take over the country before they join Nato. I think russia would not attack if they was with Nato. Nato have to attack back if a member is attacked for sure.
Here's what had happened, that triggered Russian response... Israel backs Georgia in Caspian Oil Pipeline Battle with Russia This Russian response was expected IMO...
http://www.georgiatoday.ge/article_details.php?id=3902 This is not very recent but i believe Putin hadn't changed his idea, there may be a split in the Caucasus if Russia can not be talked into otherwise. Though what i don't get is, northern Abkhazia is a Russian territory if i'm not wrong and the land dispute might spread there as well. PS: Local news just reported there are over a thousand deaths in the fire exchange, now things are totally out of hand.
Yeah this is quickly becoming very very hot news worldwide. With thousands dead, this doesn't seem to be getting any better, as a matter of fact, it seems to worsen by the hour. Are there any Georgian DP members here that are able to comment? That would be quite interesting....
the georgians will probably get seriously pwned if the russians get involved in this thing seriously. I hope this thing cools off ASAP. I'm not confortable with this war going on in our back yard.
Well, breaking news is getting hotter by the minute, now Georgian military bases are being pwned by Russian aircraft. Man...that's crazy!
You can see the leoseo biasness easy here. He doesn't say that Georgia has started the bombing and that in that area 90% of the population is Russians. Russia recognizes Georgia's territory unlike Turkey or US who recognize the illegal country of Kosovo. Also this Georgian aggression was approved by guess who? I'll help you: Somebody who has OIL interests in the region.
I just quoted the first paragraphs of the news and provided a link for the rest and barely made any comment, you are who is biased you make things off your mind.
True. You showed your side of the storry, and only parts of it. The ones that you like. .........The timing suggests Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili may have been counting on surprise to fulfill his longtime pledge to wrest back control of South Ossetia — a key to his hold on power. Saakashvili agreed the timing was not coincidental, but accused Russia of being the aggressor. "Most decision makers have gone for the holidays," he said in an interview with CNN. "Brilliant moment to attack a small country." The United States was sending an envoy to the region on Friday to meet with the parties involved to try to end hostilities. "We support Georgia's territorial integrity," State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos told reporters. "We are working on mediation efforts to secure a cease-fire." South Ossetian separatist leader Eduard Kokoity claimed hundreds of civilians had been killed. Ten Russian peacekeepers were killed and 30 wounded when their barracks were hit in Georgian shelling, said Russian Ground Forces spokesman Col. Igor Konashenkov. Russia has soldiers in South Ossetia as peacekeeping forces but Georgia alleges they back the separatists.......... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080808/ap_on_re_eu/georgia_south_ossetia If US has citizens attacked anywhere in the world don't you think US wouldn't send troops to defend them? US will and I agree they should. LeoSeo, you have proved many times you are far away from honest and fair discussions. You can't have it both ways or you face fighting.
Sigh.. OK next time instead of pasting the first parts i'll try to pick the parts i assume you'll like. Besides, i don't know what makes you think i take the Georgian side, because i'm not, and have no reason to. I won't respond the last part of your post as i believe noone is interested in this knee-jerk when there's literally a war going on there. Find me on the aftermath thread and we'll talk about honesty
