Do You Think Libraries are DEAD after advent of Google?

    Hello everybody,

Yesterday my brother requested me to drop him to a local library. He required material based on which he would compile his findings and research. I asked him why do you want to walk up to a library, search for books, flip the pages and start reading, when you can have all the information at your "fingertips" at the comfort of your home?

He was adamant that "while i know it is possible but I would find material which is new as well good old"....

I wasn't convinced... I said: at least I find what ever I need on internet, don't have to walk up to a library for....

in the end we agreed to "dis-agree"

    What are you thoughts?

    Thank you

No…libraries still have their roles. You can’t find certain in-depth research papers online and that is only available in libraries.

I think over the long term libraries are in trouble, but some are adapting providing online access etc.

Libraries suck. There are online research databases which contain all the books but online that are found in libraries.

Libraries still have those newspaper databases, which are nice.

Someone once said something about "1000 monkeys on 1000 typewriters composing the complete works of shakespeare".

The internet has proved that wrong.

The birth of internet and google strengthened the need for better libraries and they will serve or complement the online search.

Books provide higher quality information than 98% of websites.

And Google won't compete with libraries unless they are successful in getting the capability and rights to indexing print books. If they do that, the need for libraries will end, except for the ones that have special books that aren't indexed.

i been downloading movies from usenet for years, yet blockbuster is still in business.

the internet isn't going to replace everything.
people will still go to libraries, just like they still buy/rent dvds.
also now, libraries have computers with internet access,so for people without can go to google. :D

That's pretty ridiculous. Maybe go to a library and find out for yourself?

Libraries are a nice place to get out of the house to study in groups with other students.
A lot of people don't like the background noise that you hear while studying at coffee shops.

I only go to libraries nowadays to borrow actual story books and not to do any research. Hmm.

Far from it. There's still plenty of good information at the library.
