Does the "-" in a domain name hurt or benefit SEO? Or neither?

Let's say for example... I own..

    funurl.com

    and

    fun-url.com

I don't actually own those two, they are just examples. The reason why I'm asking is because the domains I do own, I think it's easier to read if there is a "-" in there, I'm just wondering how much that effects SEO and ranking? On another note, I do own the "-" and non versions, so I'll be using redirects for the others which ever I use.

One hyphen I believe has no effect on SEO; two or more hyphens may have a negative effect,

Hyphens have no effects on SEO since it is just an automated spider which goes around and indexing sites and can handle a variety of domain names style. However, if you are targetting real people as your visitors, it can get an adverse effect for type-ins.

I was thinking about that, but the mixture of the xxx-xxx words together makes it look like just a bunch of mixed up letters, the space apart makes it easier to read. Hmmmm.. tough choice.

Does it pass the telephone test? Is it easier for listeners to understand "digital point dot com" or "digital dash point dot com"? Some will think you said digitaldashpoint.com.

It's better without the dash -and in most cases there is already a no-dash website that will steal your traffic.

I understand what you are saying but if you have to remember a domain name, would you remember the dashes too as the norm ?

Of course, if the URL are merely for the sake of clicking then it would look neater with the dashes.

I've noticed that its easier to memorize and type without the "-" ... however its deffinitly easier to read with the "-" ..

tough choice but i'd go without it.

This question has been asked many times. please search the forum.

I believe this will help. I know Search engines will understand without dashes also. However, on some words it may understand wrongly.

Without the dash will get you more type in traffic, with the dash you get treated the same by the search engines for organic rankings.

i don't believe hypens have any affect on SEO. i think it may actually help in signaling separation of key words to search engines. my first two domains i bought back in 1999 and 2000 have hypens and are page 1 and page 2 for their key words. also this body building site is super hard to remember with all the dashes but is one of the most successful sites in that niche and usually position 1 for the key words. only thing the dashes do is make it hard for direct traffic and people trying to remember your domain. having said all that, i'd prefer the name without a dash vs. one with a dash.

it has no effect on SEO.
Although having a dash is considered bad as the traffic leaks onto the non hyphenated version.
There is a drastic price drop in the dash version too.
