..... I have just used dmoz for the first time for what it was really intended for. Well "almost" really intended for - but at least I found it usefull in a way other than trying to get backlinks.... I was looking for links from lots of different European websites - I had posted a few enquiries here on DP and on other euro forums.... and then it hit me. DMOZ is a great directory of good PR sites broken down regionally! Hey Presto - dMoz DOES get used every now and then as a resource!! MOG
Where I have found it occasionally useful is looking for credible resources on particular medical conditions - when using Google you get mostly sites trying to sell drugs (ie the sort of sites that DMOZ does not list, but most other directories do list!). It does have its use from time to time.
thats a point as well..... my my, I never thought Id find a decent use for it! guess we are all wrong, dmoz does have a place in our lives!
IMO DMOZ doesn't give a true representation of sites, many sites i compete against for certain keywords, are in DMOZ and rank higher but have far inferior content. I have submitted numerous sites numerous time and never had one accepted?
You answered your own question: 1) "Numerous times": Why did you submit more than once? ...doing so counts against you. 2) "Numerous sites": Are you talking about the sites in your signature?...did you actually read what you agreed to when you submitted the sites about 'related sites'? ....submitting the related sites counts against you. (BTW - the couple I checked are not even listable - did you bother to read the guidelines about whats listable and not ... you ticked a box agreeing that you did) How do you think any directory (not just DMOZ) should treat those who can't follow the guidelines?
I can understand your comments considering your looking at the sites in my signature, but i have only tried to submit one of the sites in my signature. The others have been from previous years and for friends etc. When i say numerous , i mean different sites, i generally only submit one site, maybe once a year, so my main site in my signature has been submitted twice. i don't think that is over the top. What irk's me about dmoz, is that i was under the impression that it's purpose was to provide a quality directory of quality sites to enhance the user experience, then if that the case then my site should be within the directory, and here is why... I actually run the business that is in my signature, we are secured loan packagers, we are not lead sellers ( nothing against that!) but from a consumer point of view, surely it is better to go direct to a company that can help with your enquiry, than have your details sold to the highest bidder through an affiliate site. The affiliate site is not really acting in the best interests of the client and therefore is not the best site to enhance the user experience. So my point is this quality content on a site does not necessarily mean best site for user experience. With this in mind why is it then, that i find affiliate sites and sites which are obviously lead generation sites listed in dmoz when i cannot get in.
I agree. It's great for finding undiscovered websites with valuable info. But there are also crap websites that got into DMOZ. I don't know why these sites are still there. No updates for years. Some of them are links of Geocities and Angelfire.
I'm not a huge fan of Geocities or Angelfire... but when I was editing there I put in my share of both in History categories. Unlike some areas where updating is crucial, a site that details events that happened 50 - 100 years ago is not likely to have a problem if it isnt regularly updated. That's a specific exception to the norm, and in other areas culling is a good thing. About the only good thing to say about the Geocities type submissions was that they had a lot more effort put into them than the MFAs (unfortunately frequently submitted in that same cat). I figured if someone took the time to put it together (some geocity sites had great content) the fact that it had an interface as ugly as the url didnt disqualify it from being of use. Not an argument with your point, just a clarification why sometimes there are over-riding factors. In some of the non-commercial niche areas geocity types were about the only choice. Did find some occasional diamonds in the rough. I was a very slow enough editor to start with, but when I got into those categories it was worse... too tempting to stop and read.
Dmoz is a great directory with good PR in categorie sites also in regionally. Dmoz is a great resource if it is upkeep to the spirit and purpose of the creator of the directory.
DMOZ is great for some categories, but not for the categories where the editors are being paid off for every submission. I have yet to get a website accepted but that is because the sites I need to do directory submissions for are typically the websites I don't care much about.
