For those who may or may not be familiar with Amit Mehta from superaffiliatemindset.com, his PPC strategy is to first start your campaign with a 1 keyword per adgroup, 2 ads per adgroup structure with going broad/wide, once you find which keyword brings good traffic and converting, then you go deep in finding variations of that root keyword. He illustrated the example of digging keyword for antispyware. Most affiliates/PPC marketers will start getting keywords like anti-spyware free anti-spyware anti spyware softwares free antispyware softwares etc et, which are all fall into the same narrow root of anti-spyware which are highly competitive and limiting your traffic. Instead, you should go after keywords like; delete malware delete spyware delete trojan delete backdoor etc etc etc you name it. and make each of these keyword as its own 1 keyword highly relevent adgroup AT the Very Start. This isn't a bad idea, however, this will make literally 1000s of adgroups and even more ad copys. I have tested to see if this is a good method. So i made my campaign structure such as way with the nice little tool of EfficientPPC. Well, with all that said, I uploaded my 1000s of adgroups yesterday. And guess what my affiliate manager from CPAEmpire emailed me this morning saying he's see considered amount of traffic into one offer but no conversion. I looked at both my campaign stats and cpaempire stats, I have 4000+ clicks to my offer and no clicks to my ad in my ppc campaign (i did direct linking to test out the offer first)....strange I thought. Late I figured it is most likely due to the google bot crawling my ad when I launched my campaign to check the relevency of my landing page. Because i'm doing direct link, all the bots go to the merchant offer......... Well, I don't know if it is going to get some trouble with the merchant or not..But having 1 keyword per adgroup with thousands of adgroups?? I really don't know if it's a good thing to do or not...
There is no penalties imposed by Google for having this many adgroups. As for the merchant, why would they be bothered? If you explain what you did and that it was the Googlebot, they shouldn't have a problem. Your only real concern is how you go about managing that many adgroups efficiently.
the only problem with having a lot of adgroups is that you have to copy/paste ads into each one of them. also google used to say there was a 2000 adgroup limit per campaign, but now they say 100 adgroups per campaign, which i think is not true, since most of my campaigns have well above that. i even verified with 3 separate google reps as that is what the new documents say, but this is not true. google does allow exceptions to various rules but this rule is strictly unenforced. the key to great adgroups is to have tightly themed adgroups.
This is a very effective method of optimization, but I would not start a campaign this way as its way to time consuming. I prefer the bucket and extract method... Much easier and a lot less time is wasted I also agree that I think its 2k adgroups, not the 100...
You don't need to copy and paste ads into each one of them. Check out www.EfficientPPC.com, it is a really nifty tool. I think SpeedPPC does the similar thing. Any way, just check it out and you will find out how effective and efficeint it can be
It is indeed quite effecitve, ande not neccessarily time consuming if you use tools like effiecientPPC or speedPPc (lol, seems like I'm promoting them, but i'm not).. just give a brief overview of what those tool does, it creates long tail keywords for u and u can make your adgroups into per keywords level or whatever u want. For example, if you want to do dating campain in particular, let's say spanish dating. You can firstly write some variations of spanish words such as spanish, latin, hispanic, etc. then another keywords list consisting dating words e.g. dating, date, dating websites, love, etc etc etc, then with with efficientPPC, you can group these keywords together say {spanish-words}+{dating words} then even you can have us-cities words. it automatically gives you all the combinations (you can specifiy what particular order u want), and the ads can do automated too... It's a very efficient tool, definitely show have a look if you haven't. To: Seoster, yes it is 2000 adgroups per campaign.
Yes! there is no penalty at all but could you just waste time making thousands of campaigns just to make up with your keywords and are you willing to waste time checking on all your campaign data after launching those campaigns? Keyword targeting with is not a reliable way to see what keyword works best because they are not detailed to make things clear for you on that part if that's what you are after of.
Yes I know there are tools that do this... I have designed one myself that is much more efficient than both those softwares... While the time consumption can be dramatically reduced from doing it manually, it still does not out weight the benefits. Unless you are 100% sure about every single keyword, then its still a waste of time
The only downside to his method is the ctr will suffer for the campaign in the beginning. There is no way all 2,000 adgroups will have a high ctr unless he's using a gigantic budget right off the bat and bidding each keyword to the top 3 spots at minimum. There are lots of ways to do this and this method requires deep pockets and a lot of automation and experience to tackle successfully.
Robert, could you share some of your ppc tactics, i remember you talked about bucket and extract, if you can kindly elaborate it, it will be much appreciated
I may write and article or create a how to video on this in the near future... Im working on a site dedicated to adwords training and help with in depth articles and video tutorials
OK, I could be biased here, but for any campaign building software, there are a few things to consider: 1) The goal of creating an ad group per keyword is to focus your ads specifically for that search term to improve your click through rate. If you've got heaps of keywords, this will certainly give you a lot of ad groups to manage, but the better targeting is usually worth it (and you wouldn't want to do it manually). 2) Keeping in mind point 1, you can cluster very similar keywords into one ad group so you are not creating as many ad groups but are still focusing your ads, eg. plurals and misspellings of the same keyword 3) Any campaign rests on its keywords so these need to be well-researched to start off with. The softwares are great for creating ads and landing pages based on your keywords, but if the keywords suck then it doesn't matter how targeted it is. 4) If you are launching huge campaigns, then keep a close eye on it and cull the keywords/ad groups that don't work. I often start small and build it up from there but either way works.
