    No I remember it was either Infoseek or Altavista, never really catch up with using Google quite sometime after. Yahoo was more of a directory and less of a search engine.

    Ahh.. Alta Vista , Lycos, Inktomi ( now there was a bot ) Excite, before the Google monopoly , when keyword stuffing still worked.. great days indeed

    Altavista's results rocked in the 90's. The went by the wayside as to much information became available in the index imo.

    I can't believe no one mentioned Web Crawler. Web Crawler was THE search engine before yahoo, and before Alta Vista. in fact, Web Crawler was the first search engine I can remember. Then came AltaVista, Northern Light. Then yahoo and Excite.

    I think Altavista was the King back in 1997. Yahoo was also big, but I think I used Altavista the most then.
    In those days, I would use several search engines.

    I used to use the search from Yahoo a lot until Google went "BIG" so I supposed Yahoo was one of those which dominated.

    I remember Altavista, Yahoo and of course *ahem* Lycos.
    But sadly nowadays only old timer Yahoo is left in the competition.

    Actually, there are a few others still around. Excite was created around 1993, and is now Ask.com.
    Infoseek was really popular around 95, and is now go.com
    Inktomi was integrated into yahoo.

    WebCrawler was really the first 'modern day' search engine, because it was the first one that indexed all of the words on all webpages and made them available to search through in 93 or 94. Before then, only urls and names of files were indexed. I'm not sure whatever happed to them.

    I remember Altavista being THE search engine. I used it a lot. Then I started using Yahoo until Google was created and started its world domination.

    I had some great anime sites running before 1998, which were receiving up to 10,000+ unique everyday, but most of the traffic came from people bookmarking and from topsite lists.
