Prize values and durations

What is the general consensus regarding prizes offered on websites? Do you have better customer retention if you offer a grand prize at the end of the month (based upon whatever criteria you have defined), or daily prizes?

Assuming you like the product that is...

Which would inspire you to continue to play? The opportunity to make money daily, or monthly. Or possibly a combination of both?

The site in question is BattleScores.com. We currently offer daily prizes based upon player scores in tournaments.

Sometimes I will give away a $20 LED flashlight to one of the active members, but I dont know if it really helps with member retention.

Something that members seem to like, is a donation made from the website to a not for profit organization. That way the members feel like they are helping other people. Stay away from donations to religious organizations, as that might cause problems. Something like the march of dimes, or cancer research for children are good organizations to donate to. One online store I know about donates 10% of all profits to a certain not for profit organization. Both the store and organization are in the same nitch, so it balances out.

If you are a US citizen, or if your business is based out of the USA - at the end of the year you can use the donations as a tax write off.

Well, I'm not asking for donations. I'm wanting to give money away as prizes. Trying to figure out what is a better incentive... daily giveaways or larger grand prize at the end of a month.

    I'm sure they do.

However, I'm looking for someone with possibly experience offering both as incentives for customer retention. Which ones work best.
