Content is always the King. But If you need Traffic, You have to get the Backlinks, Links.

Content is so important! Once you have got that just right, keep working on building your links nice and gradually.

While I have to agree that content is essential, vital to long term ranking high in the serps it is at least partially dependent on the competitive market you are in as to how much content you need. In the e-commerce area I am in, there are sites that are ranking high on competitive terms that have little, if any content. That being said the competition has very little content and much of their pages are in the supplemental listings, or at least were there. Some of my competitors do have some content on their sites, while others who rank high don't. The sites that are consistently ranking high in the serps though do have lots of back links. It is becomming clearer to me that long term I need a lot more content. All the while in the short term I need more links to be competitve. Perhaps, we in the e-commerce area are a little behind the power curve but inevitably the same principles apply in whatever area you are in although the competitive landscape does have something to do with it. Thanks for your input, it is really appreciated.

I think the top which you keep bringing up is that you are an e-commerce site. Clearly Google does a lot of "magic" in who it compares and ranks site A against site B. When both are content sites, then I think the vast majority of what has been said in this thread makes sense. It is interesting, however, to question how Google's comparisons/rankings would differ when talking about non-traditional content sites, or e-commerce sites.

The phrase "content is king" also comes from the fact that great content generates everything which your site needs to be successful. Add a great blog and attract loads of links. Add a great tool, a great top ten, a great case study or piece of research and you'll get loads of links without having to link build.

Yup, both are important - links will bring the people, content makes them stay. Pretty simple :)

Well it's obvious everyone agrees that content is important...but back to the original question of providing quality content that the SE's will eat-up for an e-commerce type site. I guess I don't know much about selling lingeria online...but I'm sure there are plenty of oppurtunities for content.

You said that you can only write so much about a peice of lingeria, but you could always write about new items, sale items, etc. What about seasonal lingeria (christmas, v-day, etc) how to buy for your wife, what to buy for your wife, what to buy if you are a wife, spiceing up the bed with lingeria, etc, etc. You could also rely on your users to rate and write content about your products...what about top 10 peices for july, august, etc.

I'm sure you could find tons of content to write...

I would defiantly work more on content. I have some of the best backlink options available yet i don't work on my content as much as I should. My site has suffered as a result of this so I think, the more likely people will stay on your site, visit again, or tell a friend.

I aggree - there are a ton of ideas of articles you could write that relate to your topic. I would suggest picking the two or three key words you want to emphasize then look up synonms for them. Then enter all of that into a keyword tool (the free one with google for example) to generate a ton of words that you want to try to incorporate into your article. Then from that word list, write your article. Your outcome will be a good quality article that is also robust in the key words you are targeting for your particular product.

Since posting this I have been drawing up a list of articles and you are correct, coming up with ideas is not too difficult. Many of your suggestions will be coming to an article real soon -:)
Like a lot of things in seo when I stop trying to find the short cut and settle down to doing it right it isn't all that difficult, but yes it is time consuming isn't it?
