Back in the day, pre-Google they were very important but now when I'm carrying out SEO work on a site should I bother submitting to directories? I know DMOZ is still around and probably carries some weight, but apart from getting listed in there, do directories matter anymore (for SEO).
It's always good to get more backlinks but directories are not that important. It is still good practice to submit your site to them but don't waste too much of your time. Most of the directories get close to no visits so do your homework before spending 3 days submitting your site everywhere. DMOZ is important but it can take a few months to get listed after the submission as they review each of them manually.
Wow, that's good to know now that I spent half a day listing with directories. Thanks for the info, think I'll stop while I'm ahead.
Yes it is still important. We cannot say it is the wasting of time. It is the best source of backlinks to the new websites.
yup, i think is good for long time stable in SE but you need relevant category i think if any site submit in right category then give some value otherwise is wast of time.
It is still Important. Its very hard to listed in Dmoz but you can concentrate on other Directory. the most important thing is they are providing one way back link and as SE point of view this links rocks your site.
I think it is good if you submit the details of your site in the directories which have popular on the web and are shown in top SERP.
Directories with pagerank are worth signing up to. Even PR1/2's. If you buy for example, a load of PR5's it looks a little suspicious so the directory links will 'pad' this out with PR1's and 2's. If you want higher PR's you can pay for best of the web etc.
it does still give backlinks so it is still good way of linkbuilding and it is still important any aspect that will improve your backlink is important in seo even if it weigh less it is still important.
around autumn last year a lot of the directories took a pagerank hit in Google's paid links war. There's still some decent ones out there though dependent on category, and it's still a straight forward way to get links. some tips: submit to dmoz, you probably won't get in but it's free so does no harm. follow the submission guidelines properly and make sure you pick the most appropriate category! Check your competitor backlinks to see what directories they're listed in Check the google/yahoo cache dates of the pages you will be listed on. if they're not cached or a couple of months old, don't bother don't bother with free or recip directories, just go for paid ones as they generally have a quick turnaround in terms of getting listed
Few days back, I did came across a thread mentioning that google are nowadays downgrading internal pages of high PR directories to nil. While I haven’t confirm on that, with this kind of development, it doesn’t look good.
a little direction submission will never hurt, just don't overdo it and don't overrely on it, Hoping too much on directory submission will certainly disappoint you
