I THINK directory submission can get you out of the sandbox

My website was beginning to vanish off the face of Google until I hired a company to submit my website to 500 directories. After a couple of weeks my website slowly moved up until it was finally #1 for the key phrase I was going for.

Directory submission is important in kink building. By doing this you can get more one-way link.

How do you know it was due to directory submission and was not coincidental?

Yes, Directory can surely help, if the links come from Proper Category and from High PR directory site or page.

Remember to share your experience with those that say directory submissions are worthless. :)

Congrats on your top ranking position!

I agree with the 1st poster. I have a new site that gained a pr3 from submission to directories and had no other incoming links.

How old was the site when this happened?
The chances are the links from the directories were your only links, and your site wasn't in the sandbox, just there was atrickle of link juice and some good anchor.

Personally I feel that the directories are the 21st century eqivalent of
    "Snake Oil"
It's an easy route to getting links.

I'll tell you why 99 % of directories are shite.
    1. The age of the directory
    2. The backlinks of the directories of themselves carry no trustrank.
    3. Have a look in directries section. Everyone thinks PR is everything.
All they do is buy a PR7 blog link for a few months, wathc the little green bar go up and them assume it will impart "majical properties" on any site from it as long as the anchor tect is good and it is on a high pr page.
    BULL
    4. Directories even DMOZ are far too general.

Google like Niche diretories (not nice) I would assume that a niched directory actually helps the G bot set site contexts, and raises both trust ranks.

Thus if you are going to use a directory then make sure it is about as specific as you can get for your industry.
A PR zero directory on ball bearings will probally do you more good if listed site is also about ball bearing than the best PR5/6/7 "best webdirectory ever"

The reason why directories are so popular as they are an easy way for webamasters to make money, mainly through submissions, without ever actually having a unique idea and site!

like all correlational studies cause and effect cannot be established XD but heck if it might work you might as well do it.

    @snowbird
Who would say directory submissions are worthless !! directory submissions alone has made some of my clients rank first for many niche keywords, heck type in laptop repairers and one of the sites in the top 4 was put there by only directory submissions and that was only as a bi product of using mulitple titles in submissions lol. (thats google.co.uk not com the sites a uk based laptop repair company it is also in my signiture as well as laptop repairers now i think of it :p)

Directories are good for easy links but the links they give are seldom any good. You need to be listed on a high PR page.

Directories are good for getting inbound links that help your site rank for the keywords in the anchor text.

Toolbar PR is not a good indicator of the value of a link. Google uses internal pr not the values displayed in the toolbar to rank pages. Further many pages have their ability to flow pagerank blocked. In any case the pr in the toobar is only a snapshot of your pr taken a month or so ago. The pr is already out of date,

Value your links by the 'smell test' not what the toolbar tell you.

The niche directories are like gold. Helps you build trust, and authority (hilltop algo)
