New Search Engine "Cuil" developed by former Googler

There was a new search engine released today that goes by the name of Cuil (Irish word for "wisdom"). It was created by Anna Patterson who was in charge of upgrading Google's search technology a few years back.

Here are a few stories (and video) on it: http://www.congoo.com/news/2008July28/Search-Engine-Cuil-Google

I tried a few searches on it and it seems ok. I don't know if its a "Google-killer" but it probably has the best shot out of everyone.

It's still in beta, and I was occasionally getting the error, "Cannot produce search results due to high server load."

    What does everyone else think?

I would agree that it is over rated.

Lots of bloggers have been writing about it. They are definetly getting a ton of free exposure (event with this post).

I think the reason is that its an ex google employee. The same one who improved their first search.

I wouldn't call their Beta launch a success.

I do think that if anyone has the ability to "in time" dethrone google, then Cuil has a decent shot. A large part of the battle is going to be convincing people to change their search habits and become accustomed to a different format of search results.

I also wonder if google has the upper hand considering so many webmasters optomize their sites to be google friendly (not necessarily search friendly)

    Hey there,

I checked it out yesterday, some of my sites came up on the first page while some others did not . Thats cool, early days for 'em, everyone has teething & bug problems starting out. I personally won't be using it substantially as yet.

From a business point of view, Google wasn't built overnight, it took time, 10+ years actually, yes they have dominated search for a good while now, however 12 years ago who had ever heard of 'em ? , well not me anyway, i could be slow or something HaHa !. My point is if they have the ingredients such as a technical backbone and the money to grow and compete in the market space and grow some share... Well who knows what could happen.

I think Cuil's outlook on searching is refreshing and looks to have great potential. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this one. I love the name!

they got the best free press anyone could ask for, and blew the launch.

Ironically, the only query that returned the results I wanted was Google... I think they have a really long way to go.

For a 120 billion indexed pages I find it odd that when I enter a search term like "top 10 Boston Bruins" I get 0 results while Google gives me some 581,000...
