Browsers?

I am checking my website using a checker website which shows you what your websites look like in browsers. However some of the browsers are old, never used, and don't work just because they haven't been updated.

So it would be great to know which ones do work, and that are used on the Internet on Linux, Mac, and Windows computers. Also what versions for example IE6, IE7, etc....

Mac = Safari
Linux = Firefox now a days.
The three browsers I use when testing are Firefox, Opera & IE6/7

 

Do you want browser statisitcs? There are many sites with those stats.

Those screenshot sites are no substitute for the real thing. Better to install XAMPP, IE6, IE7, Firefox, Opera and Safari to do a complete test. VPN is handy for testing IE6 and IE7 on the same computer.

I am fairly sure the linux browser Konqueror is going to be using WebKit (Safari's Engine) rather than KHTML, so no real need for that anymore.

If you are using browsershots - screw that, just download each browser:
Opera
Firefox
Safari for Windows
Internet Explorer 7
Internet Explorer 6 & Lower

Yup. Pretty much the only rendering engines out there. Most other browsers are based off of IE, Firefox or Safari.

 

So:

• Opera,
• Safari,
• FF,
• IE6&8,

 

Opera, Safari, Fx, IE6&7

IE8 still in beta and half the stuff doesn't work.

 

So don't worrie about IE8?

Also do many people still use older versions of IE, rather then 6?

 

Most IE users use IE6 rather than 7. Don't worry about anything earlier than that (5.5 if you are really obsessed, but very, very few people use that anymore)

Don't worry about IE8 until its released.

 

Just realized when I put IE6, and IE8. I meant to put IE6, and IE7.

Well my site looks great in all of these browsers. So I am happy.

 

I use IE6 & 7, Firefox, Opera and Safari for testing. Also use Lynx, a text browser to see how it looks like to search engines.

Should I also test my website on different screen resolutions?

 

Yes, different screen resolutions and different font settings (larger text, smaller text, zoom in, zoom out etc)

 

Can you suggest resolutions?

Is there mainly just two?

 

i use firefox 3 and think its great, lots of great plugins available too

 

Really your site should be viewable from 800x600 to 1280x1024, but if you start at 1024 to 768 it's ok too, as most people are getting away from 800x600.

Definately don't bother to worry about anything below 800x600. I have a computer that uses 600x400 and it's just horrible. If they use lower than 800x600, it doesn't matter if it fits because it will look horrible anyways.
