it is probably a competitor that has a similar website as you. but yours is probably more successful. so they want your traffic :S

that has happened to me a few times :(
best thing to do is get software to trace there IP. i think anyways.
or get there Hostname xD and contact there ISP and BOOM there internet turns off LOL

Use mod_evasive, mod_security (may help for specific requests) and DDoS Deflate.

No, there is no real solution to stopping DDoS attacks. My line of business is in security, and venturing into many research, there is no effective method out there for completely stopping a DDoS attack. A typical DDoSer will quit after 3 days or within a few hours. If you still suffer from the downtime, then you can resort to switching to another host.

I can help you protect yourself from attacks. Easier than one might think, you just have to know the correct approach to take to attacks :)

As of now I have only heard the only way to protect you against DDOS attacks is hiring a professional service to implement extra security features on your server.

There are several companies specialized in preventing these attacks if you do a research for the term.

If it's just a one-time attack you want to stop, a Proxy shield might help you. For permanent (software based) solution, APF and (D)Dos Fleat are probably the best solution.
I just have to further use the situation and advertise my blog (in signature) as there are articles about seting up both of them.
