Trying to figure out how to use affiliate ads on my sites

I've found a lot of affiliate programs that would fit on my sites, especially the homesteading site (green products), but I can't figure out how to get them on there and get people to go to them. Totally green with affiliate advertising, and I've just been sticking ads on pages as "sponsor ads" and have yet to get a sale.

Can you tell me what works best for you when you incorporate and affiliate ad into your site? I mean, as far as what content to put them on. Say I had an affiliate that sells solar panels. Now these are really expensive, so would it work best to do an article telling how much they will save you over time, and how long it takes for them to pay for themselves, and put the ads on that page? In an instance like this, would you use banner ads, or text links within the content?

I personally do not do reviews of companies I've never done business with, so that's out. I also don't like to use the fear tactics. People who are going to buy solar panels have been thinking about it awhile.

Most of my products are like this because of what I write about. They're not something that you would just look at the ad and say "oooo...I'd like one of those!" The page they're on will have to have some incentive to click and buy.

I'd really like to hear what has worked with people who have been relatively successful at this. And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not spam me with materials on how to maximize affiliate programs on your site.

    Thanks!

I'd really like to hear opinions on this, guys. I'm pretty much lost with this. Just tell me if my ideas are o.k., and likely to work, o.k.?

Thanks a lot, guys. You're the best!

I'm no guru but I think you should put your affiliate links into the articles.

While your at it please take a look at my affilaite program and some of my services. I think we might be a good match.

    Don't do "sponsor ads"

People skip over ads. Make a short article (with graphics) telling them about this amazing product/service you know about.

Works wonders. Trust us! We have been in the affiliate business since affiliate programs started.

Create a new page name it something like "resources" or "free Advice" you know what i mean. then add your affiliates to that page as links, articles, tips and ect.
if your page is devoted to your own product or services DO NOT link your affiliates on main page.

    good luck

Thanks! I'll probably do a little of all of what has been suggested.

Definitely good advice here but first you must establish a rapport with your web visitors or blog readers. Truth, honesty and trust are the thre key elements in affiliate marketing and people generally won't click and buy if they don't feel safe.

Thanks, Bryce. I write on things I have to be honest about, mostly. I try to give people as much information for free as I can, and hopefully, they will see that, and come to trust my expertise, then trust my judgment and buy from me.

I agree. If your going to do affiliates, you should always add content for them. It makes things a lot better. And they get more exposure and clicks. I also have seen some great stuff with adding affiliate boxes to like avatars and making like a post about them. I dont member where I saw it, but it looked really nice. Like a real post and had the links and all.

Agreed, an editorial recommendation from someone who has established themselves as a trustworthy source is always better than a blatant advertisement.
