    One of the least expensive of the bigger registrars is Name.com
    $5.99, which included Private Registration.

    You are absolutely right. I just confirmed this ~ $7.99 (which is not so bad if you require Private Registration).

    Godaddy transfers are $6.99

    Perhaps a place such as domainsarefree.com ?
    I do not have a handy price quote on transfers there...but
    registrations are $3.99 so perhaps transfers are fairly inexpensive.

    name.com is cheap but they have little problem with scripts too dont jump to reg at critical time ;)

    some time it shows domains taken but they unregistered

    I think I remember reading somewhere that Godaddy is now the cheapest for transfers of $6.85 with a coupon. Not sure if it's still the same now or not.
