Are penalties for directories about to be lifted?

After Matt Cutts announced the export of PR values to the toolbar he also states some older penalties would be expiring..
does this include penalties for directories?

"Hey folks, I wanted to let you know that new toolbar PageRank values should become visible over the next few days.
I’m expecting that also in the next few days that we’ll be expiring some older penalties on websites."

    Good luck everyone

I would say not, it is all a load of bull or maybe clever link bait. It would be great to see some of the better directories returning. The Google hit was nothing more than a joke really, just searching Google for “Web Directory” and look at the remaining Directories that were committing the same crimes as the penalized sites were if not more yet managed to avoid being penalized. First Google tell us to correct our mistakes and request reconsideration, now we are hearing that the penalty is simply going to expire. It’s now a waiting game.

    Thanks Brian

    yes I agree
the message sent was not a clear one when some of the directories not penalised were some of the worst offenders
also with very little information on how to get the penalty lifted for your site it was difficult to know which steps to take beyond removing any sitewide links

There has been no mention on the exact penalty that is going to expire. I believe it wont be related to directories.

    Good find discover ;)

Whether or not they get lifted is up to them, but i really hope they are fair with "everyone"
whom did get a penalty and give them back their status or atleast when someone searches
for a domains name it shows on the first page and not the 6-7 page like many directories
    that got slammed...

Things are real good right now; very profitable and none of the hassles with page rank hounds. I hope things do not revert back to the former mayhem ever.

Those sites that changed in order to stay in line with Google's webmaster guidelines may be unpenalised. Those that have changed nothing shouldn't sit in hope just because of something Cutts wrote on his blog.

This sad fellow, aka MC, throws a peanut from time to time and thousands of people byte and keep on writing, talking, linking...

That post makes no sense from my point of view. Why the hell did he posted that PR is going to update when everyone knew and why the hell he threw the little "penalisation" pill in there? The internet community is busy discussing the Microsoft vs. Yahoo story and he probably felt that Google is no getting much attention these days so yeah...let's create a bit of buzz...

we should al start promoting msn search or yahoo on our directories.

    That would hurt google...

Hardly. Its the average web surfers that make google what they are. Google is more accurate than Yahoo and MSN so will always be more popular unless things change.

well from what I see there are definitely some directory owners who have changed their ways from last year (me included)
I think some owners deserve to have those penalties lifted especially since I don't even know how some of them received a penalty in the first place?

I think also what these penalties has done is made PR a lesser factor for the more knowledgeable submitters and that can only be a good thing
the waters are now muddier as to finding a good directory based on PR so submitters have to look a little deeper and if you have the backlinks, good content and good site structure you will be rewarded with submissions

I wonder if they will ever restore the internal page rank for directory pages?

    Good question...

The PR is there, they just made it in such way that people won't be able to see it in the toolbar. I've seen directories with PR4,5 on the homepage and PR0 on the internal pages. It doesn't make any sense to me as the PR should flow across the site so in some cases what seems to be PR0 it's actually a little more than that :)

There are loads of sites, other than directories, that have been under penalization much longer. Was a very vague statement, though will at least inspire some interest to see what happens for some of the sites I know that were alittle too aggressive with their off-site seo efforts.

I see n/a on a lot of internal directory pages, I wonder if that is better than having a pr0.

yes that is really weird allthough they are cached every 2-5 days a lot of my inner pages that was pr4 before the update now have n/a thats sure a false pr value. The weird thing is that some pages that was befoe pr4 now is pr3 and that is because i have added some more categories before this update so a normal pr distribution will be give to my inner pages a pr3 to most of them and a pr4 to some of them that are most visited instead of that i get a pr3 for the most visited and a pr n/a for all the others all thought that is so much deep crawled that reach until page 7.So we dont have to just say this is Google policy and we cant do nothing we have to study how Google treat our sites and find ways to come around every new algorythm or (penalisation) as others claim.
