Are you after a simple point and click camera, or are you looking for something more along the lines of an SLR? Canon makes some really decent SLR's which you may be able to find for around that price on the low end. However if you are just after a good point and click, I love my Olympus 1200.

Get yourself a Canon 400D/450D DSLR. Or buy a Fuji S9x series and be a maverick :D
There's a lot more to buying a camera than simply wanting "the best".

I love my Kodak Easy Share ZD710, it has features like a SLR for a fraction of the price. It is so simple to use that a child can use it but the results are amazing for such an inexpensive camera.

If you are looking for a small digital camera check out the canon ixus series. I hava an ixus 60 and I'm very satisfied with the design and the picture quality.

i think the Sony T series is pretty small too, but the quality i heard isn't as good as cannon, just the looks. there is really no "best" its more like what fits your needs the most

You are referring to the Nikon D80 at over 2 thousand bucks? Its my favorite camera if I could afford it.

I would also recommend the Lumix. From what I have seen it is a great camera.

Fuji S9600 (very good camera but 2 years old so can be found at a budget price now)
or the Fuji S100fs which is the new one..
most important improvement between the two are more megapixels, longer zoom and image stabilisation in the new model.

They are not true dslr's but offers the same possibilities.
It means you get a rather good camera with quality lens, which goes from wide angle to zoom.
The cameras work well as a point-and-shoot, but have enough features so you can do special things with it if you get interested into photography.. (extreme closeups, night shots, attach an external flash, ..)

If you buy a real dslr then you will have to buy more than one lens (and swap lenses depending on what you want to photograph), and if you want to make really nice pictures you may have to practise for months and read books about photography..

I've got an S9500 and I love it. I use it mostly for macro (with a cheap Raynox macro lens), but it's also very versatile even with the fixed lens.
