Yah, their cracking down on this. I'm not sure that just becoming friends on twitter is going to qualify for banning, but that seems to be the direction their going with this.

I setup a Twitter channel for one of our websites a while back - twitter.com/mutualpoints and also for a personal site twitter.com/environmentsite

They both basically take the rss feeds for each site and publish them on Twitter. I don't suppose that's really the ideal way of using the site, and traffic hasn't been much to write about, probably as a result. But it's essentially money for nothing so I can't complain.

I think we are going overboard with using everything for marketing.
Guys twitter is not a marketing tool, though you may get some traffic with it.
But thats not the idea here. Its about sharing interesting stuff in an interesting manner. Otherwise its almost becoming a spam center with the likes of problogger and other bigshots shooting out their 'Just written new post','new on problogger ...." twits (no offense meant).

Let not the soul of twitter die, which is basically "What are you doing now" and you should do that only if you feel its worth sharing.

I'd rather follow a tight-ass 5',3" blond holding a six pack of Miller.

This thread was merely meant to be a question and answer thread about the usefulness of Twitter as far as marketing goes. If you get lots of followers can Twitter end up being a good place to market your website, products or services?

Doesn't it depend on the individual himself?

What may work for one, may not work for another.

Try it, and see if it works for you.

I am sure your right about that. I think having reputation will help also. Someone like Matt Cutts probably gets lots of followers because of who he is, compared to an unknown person.

we should all make a twitter community and follow each other. we would have 1 million followers each and we would sell to each other crap. :))
