There is a video demonstration at that link. I don't think techcrunch are doctering a video demo.

this would be an interesting development for the future, but it makes sense. Think about it at present google decides on the popularity of a web page, but in the future users will have more of a say, although this is clearly open to abuse.

I really don't believe any future search engine mechanism or algorithm will some kind have user interaction. It just doesn't looks like google way of doing things.

I think this article further proves this is going to be the new generation of searching:

And the link counting system isn't?

It's an interesting move by google. Hopefully it works like it should!

Google is thinking of more trendy and more real-time information. This integration might be possible and good one for improvement.

    What an old news...

and yes, it can be abused. For everyone who think that there's no chance to abuse the new system, they are morons. Anything can be abused, even bank security system :D

    Are you joking?

I am not promoting tech crunh. This site has a PR8 home page and an alexa of just over 2000.

Have you heard of techcrunch? They are considered an authority as a blog about web 2.0 and startups.

I wish this was my site, but it's not, and if it was, I wouldn't be posting this here.

I just thought this would be some useful information for you guys.

ignore the guy, I remember when I accidentaly sent someone an invitation to digg over an email (when you tick boxes, I ticked few too many) and the guy emailed me with abuse and said that I affiliate with Digg and promote them.
    Wtf.

Anyway, I can't wait to the new way of searching :D

Is this a move to become more accessible to human language? I think it's a great idea but like the others have said it's open to abuse - we all know that commenting on blogs etc is a great way to create backlinks to our sites but perhaps they're ignoring that part of the comments and just reading the input text?

I agree. If Google had wanted to implement some sort of user voting system they would have done so by now. Remember Google already has feedback from the searches people perform and the results people click on. That can give some sort of indication of a sites popularity.

It is real, and it can't get abused.. this has been around for ages..
I can't remember exactly when I first read about it, but it was probably about a year ago.
If I recall correctly, there was a writeup about it at the Google lab.
You can vote sites up or down or whatever you like.. but it will only effect your search results when you are logged in to your account. It will in no way affect the SERPs for anyone else..

    :D
    Cheers

Voting on search engines can be possible and can be part of Google's masterplan. Look, Google is buying Digg.
