I've noticed many threads talking about how good it is to use digg, del.icio.us and twitter for SEO but no one ever mentioned how exactly to use these services, any advice?

    thanks in advance:)

Well these social media websites essentially don't form a part of search engine optimization, but then it differs from one person to another. Irrespective of how is it categorized, social media optimization (SMO) or rather social media marketing (SMM) is all about creating the marketing buzz. The more buzz you create the more visitors you get which could potentially convert into a client. Say for instance you write a piece of new article and submit it to digg and it becomes an instant hit. The more people read it the more chances of them visiting the website to read the entire article. It is just a way of generating more qualified visitors and advertising your business. There are some good articles on social media marketing on www.seomoz.org. Check it out.

none of the pages at Digg have nofollow attributes. :)

But I read somewhere that Google is gonna start targeting Social Bookmarking sites that don't have the nofollow attribute on them, did anyone else read about this the other month?

its really good to have a link on a high PR page even if its for limited period because these pages get indexed frequently by Google

This is woefully incorrect. It matters not that the social sites themselves are nofollow, what matters are the hundreds and thousands of back links you get from making the first page of Digg alone.

Check out nofollow tags on social bookmarking sites. If they already utilized "nofollow" tags, you will get zero link back benefit........

It's definitely not good, I read somewhere that Digg is working with google to combat spammers who are using resources like Digg for one purpose, to get one way back links and not using it for what it was orignally set up for, to provide useful information, as apposed to people just providing links to shopping cart product pages, etc.

If you use one-way linking, always check the PR of the page that would contain the backlink. Most of the times, only the home page or few pages have high PR, others have very less or no PR at all. Remember, its 'page rank', not 'site rank'. So if you get a backlink from a PR 1 page which is located on a website that has PR 5 for its homepage, you will get the advantage of PR1, not PR 5.

It depends on how much buzz you make, and how much people you know there who will vote for your story, actually every site has unique scoring system on which how good your back link will depend.

I'm still yet to be convinced of the merits of Twitter. I started using it, but it just seems like a waste of time to me. If anyone can convince me otherwise I'd be happy to listen!

Delicious - I don't think this has a large enough userbase to be significantly helpful.

The only two social networking sites that I have found to work well for SEO is Digg and Stumblupon. People are correct that Digg is nofollow, but if you're looking to use it only for the link then people are being extremely short-sighted.

Submitting great content to Digg/SU from a good established profile can mean the article goes popular, this results in a huge amount of links back to the original article. The best I have ever experienced personally is 18,000 natural links - priceless as most of them could never have been bought.
