I don't see any notification on the AVG site.

Where did you get this information from?

    Are you using version 7.5?

coz support for 7.5 (free) ends on 31st August 2008 and support for 7.5 (paid) ends 31st December 2008.

I am using version 8 and I am not getting any such notification.

    In most software

    > help > about

will tell you the exact version that you are using.

I think you are getting the message as you are using an earlier version.

This is how AVG 8 interface looks:

Anti-Spyware was not included with the Anti-Virus in earlier versions. It was a separate software.

The "link-scanner" is also a new feature in Version 8.

I think I'll use one of my old pc's, load it full of viruses, trojans, worms, & old bread and see who cleans house and who sucks the butt.

Well, I';m not going to do it, I have no time but it sounds like it would be fun to test them!

Hey bro why 8.0 if 8.5 is available, and more, I think You PC will be more protected if You use AVG firewall (AVG.Internet.Security.v8.0.169) version. I use it at home and quite pleased. The key You can get from internet if not let me know ;)

I upgraded some months back from Nod 32 to AVG Internet Security and had no problems since then. I am using Avast on my Laptop and it is good too.

Easy simple runs in bachground and catches stuff on a regular basis. You know whenever it is updated. No need to remember to check or update.
