A sites competing with the same keywords as me, are listed in dozens of paid directories...'your listing here for $25 etc etc' The page rank of the actual listing's page is usually N/A or 0, do these links have any SERP value? Interested in any feedback please
paying for links is a waste of time, why pay when you can get them for free, I could sit all day on the computer getting free links its endless
Some paid directory links are worth it for the implied "trust" you seem to gain. Yahoo and botw seem to be amongst the top choices.
Argue all you want BUT every link counts. Obvisously your competitors are in front of you and they have backlinks in paid directories. Is this telling you something ?
The original concept of paid directories was good. You pay for inclusion in a directory that is like an exclusive club. They only accepted quality links and if you were accepted, it was a good solid back link. This was prior to the quick buck directory owners who saturated the market for the quick money and than they sold the directories or ignored the directories once they made the money. I think in the current state of directories, I would have to say that a paid directory is no better than a free one and as stated above, it could result in a paid link penalty by Google. If you do find one that you really want to link from, make sure it is clearly stated that you are paying for a review of your site and not buying a link in the directory. Of course, your site must meet all the standards of that directory or you will lose the money with no link given back. Make sure to ask questions and look at the age of the directory and do not be afraid to ask how long the owner has owned it.
What you want to look for is web directories that get a lot of traffic. Then see if they rank in google for some search terms in your niche (that are on their page). If they do then the directory is obviously respected by Google. In addition, those directories will give you some traffic in addition to the link juice.
paid listing and free listing have the same effect to search engine especially to google rankings, so why do you have to pay if you can have it for free the only catch is if you are willing to wait for a few days or even a week just of approve your site unless if you want to get listed immediately and have budget for it.
Yes, thank you all for your comments, I presumed this was the case, I was just wondering why this site had paid for so many directory listings!

Sites like yahoo will be effective but their very costly to get links.
If it's niche directory, I think it will help but i don't suggest paid directories because google is doesn't love paid links. You can still get links from niche directory for free just be patient.
People what is with all this google this, google that. Get as many backlinks as you can. Free, paid, sponsors ... it does not matter. In the long term - The more the better ! Because that is what your competitors are doing ! Go after everything you can !
its not a good idea to spend money to paid directories..there are so many free directories submission sites and gives a good result in SEO so why any body go for get paid...
you're just wasting your money on paid links.. there are lots of free submissions on directories, try to submit to those.
Bullshit! Of course paid directories are worth it. Lets say you have a local directory in your country with loads of visitors. Of course it good to be listed on that site, not only for the link, but for all the traffic. But the problem is that about 95% of the directories out there, are only made for making some quick $$$$ for the site owners, and give no/little value to the visitors, hence, YOU SHOULD NOT PAY TO BE LISTED ON THEM. And then you got all the free but SPAMMY directories (not thinking about Dmoz) with no or little link value. Some good one to choose, if you are only going for links: JoeAnt.com, Skaffe.com, massivelinks.com...
