Yep, Google penalizes for multiple content, so if it browsed content on another site that copied yours and then it finds this same content on your site (where it is originally posted) your site gets penalized. This is common among RSS feed importing blogs and sites where content can be found in multiple places and penalizes various sites.

Did you notice that RSS feed is being popular every other day. Google is saying it's not good to have duplicate contents on other site. But if you take the example of new features "BlogList" in blogger , where you can show a snippet of other blogs feed in your blog and the result will be that for a search keyword, both the site will appear.

RSS feed is just copying contents everywhere. People sending their RSS feeds to Twitter, From Twitter, you can notify to Friendfeed, mybloglog and so on.

same contents flows everywhere on internet. Too difficult to handle.

It's not as simple as it looks. Lots of attention from webmaster is required. Someone else can also copy your contents and put you in trouble.

What if you are in a market where you can't avoid duplicate content?, such as an Arcade website. Thousands of webmasters all have the same games and content, because it is standard from gamepacks etc. Will this sort of duplicate content be disgarded by Google?

Also, to what extent do link exchanges cause problems? - As in how many may get you into trouble.

For example Product selling websites selling same product with same description. These kind of website are far away from Google penalty and why should they be punished? That does not make sense. Google will not discard this kind of duplicate. Internet is a market where everyone is selling his items. If you are selling someone's else item, then its a problem.

And Link exchange, You can't put a line that if you will cross this line, you will be punished. It's all depend on time when Google eyes catch you. It could be just one exchange or could be many. But excessive link exchange is dangerous for sure.

RSS feeds are meant as short little bits of info that make you want to read more, thus you need to click on the link and it brings you to the site that produces the info, not for posting a whole article in a blog, like it is so widely used

How do we know if our site or sites have been a result of googles penalties, is there a way to find this out, or do we all just assume this when a site is not doing very good in the search engine

There are many sign such as -

1: sudden huge drop in ranking of your good keywords.
2: Number of pages indexed decrease large in number. Even the numbers of indexed pages are same, The weight of these pages become low as they start appearing very last in search results.
3: The cache of your site if check from cache: operator shows a very old date.
4: Your website completly gone from search results even when you do site: operator, nothing comes out.
5: Number of backlinks decreases when check from link: operator.
6: New post made does not get index even in 3-4 days.
7: Google send mail also if your website is having something which is harmful either intentioanlly by you or by some spammers on your site. and in return Google deindexed all those pages.

    and many more

I wish they'd just email giving a warning and say what's wrong rather than an instant ban. Some of these rules seem a bit unfair.

Nothing is impossible in this world. Even the word impossible has possible in it.

First you need to find out the reason of penalty. For example- If your website is victim of duplicate contents. Simply remove extra copies from other websites if they are in your control or report to Google about those sites who are responsible for copying your contents.

Same way for other. Google always welcome your sites if it does not break Google rules. As soon as you will fix the issue, submit to Google once again and you will be there again in results for sure.

    Thanks for the advice sunil_gupta20801
I completely redid the site with predominantly unique content and submitted it to G in Feb for reconsideration but alas, no luck.
It's such a great domain that gets some direct traffic but could do so much more
I just don't know what to do any more...

Ohh, May be your site was highly penalized by Google. Yes its true nothing sure can we say that Google will consider you back, but most of the times if you redesigned the site, changed the contents and following all rules, you may come back. I would suggest you to have patience and submit the sitemap of your website to Google and send mail directly to Google support describing about the problem.

    Hi Sunil,

Good info to know! I've been reading also that over bookmarking your site from the same IP can lead to Google banning your site. Think it's called Social bookmarking spam.

SPAM word itself is dangerous. Always keep away from any kind of Spamming. Even Digg will kick you out if you will keep submitting self stories and keep spam commenting on yours or someone's else submitted stories.
