Avg 7.5 was great but like every other virus program, with 8.0 they added all of these extra crap that bogs down computers. That is the same thing that trend micro did: they were the best but then they tried to get their hands all over the spyware, adware, etc that they messed up their virus program. I wish virus programs would stick to virus programs and let spyware doctor and friends handle the rest. :(

    So then....
Which virus program is best (for just that function), and which anti-spyware should be used to complement it?

The reason I ask is because I was using AVG previously and a virus get through on a bad click (my fault for clicking in a bad neighborhood).
My clean re-install has Norton back, and I really don't want it...but it is better than nothing for now.

    you're @ least the 2nd peron to mention 8 being <<< 7 for AVG...

and so like Claymation wonders, who's the next best now that AVG is sub-par in some respects:confused:

Only a mac would be able to do that.

I think at this point, most of the virus programs have the same extra crap but I will say I especially hate norton. They tend to be the resource hoggers of all resource hoggers. Maybe avg 8 will do the trick for everything but I haven't tested it enough to know. All I know is that avg 8 and spyware doctor don't get along anymore.

I have heard good things about nod32 but i haven't tried it. Nowadays I recommend using whatever your ISP is giving away free. I guarantee it will have all the whistles (anti spyware, etc). Now whether it will do a good job with all the other stuff is a different ball game but there is no choice anymore (unless of course you disable certain features of the antivirus security suite (whatever it may be) but who wants to screw around with all of that).

    I've been using spyware sweeper
    with anti virus protection since
    october of 2006.

Norton and mcafee both let some
adware slip past them and i had to
    go buy a new laptop.

Bit Defender is the best. It's rated the best on those AV review sites and from my personal experience, it is far more superior than other AV's.
