Page 1 on Google then Page 2 - What have I done?

My problem is that I have an url that has a PR1, with 240 backlinks coming from directories and article directories, until last week I was at position 5 on Googles 1st Page, then BAM! On to top postion page 2 - what have I done wrong?

I noticed a new url that has taken top spot, knocking off my competition, for this keyword, it is for a physical product - PC enclosures. This new company has PR 0 and only 5 backlinks! So how did they get to #1 postion, can anyone tell me.

In the past 2 months, I have started submitting articles to different articles directories with my url in the bio, could this have naything to do with the changes?

    Please HELP!!!

I doubt that submitting your articles to directories did anything but help your site. If you are worried about duplicated content, just submit half of your site's articles to directories.

If you researched the web sites backlinks through google, you are not seeing all the links the competition has. I use Yahoo site explorer because it shows most of the known links and it gives them in order of most important.

It may be that the site just has more relevant links. I believe Google tends to weight links from most directories less than say from good blogs or web sites. There are exceptions to this rule, however if I were you I would attempt to get links from the sites that your competition is getting links from.

The other possible issue may be on-site optimization, perhaps they have a couple of good links and really great on-site optimization. Take a look at what they are doing and see if there is something you can incorporate into your site.

Some of the best SEO info around is provided by Scott Hendison. He does site reviews (for free) and posts them to his website. I have learned a ton from his videos and watching a few may help you determine what is going on. ;)

Its just the way it goes dont panic!!!

You need to remember that other websites are constantly making changes and mos importantly that the search engines constanly make changes to the algos they use to work out sites positions.

Just keep working away and the results will come if your doing the right things, be sure ou know the things which are deemed bad by search engines and steer clear of them and keep working away on things which will help. Dont forget to research and keep doing so thoughout your marketing project as things do change alot when it comes to search engines and its pointless chasing afterthings which wont yeild rewards for your efforts.

This could just be an update, stick to the basics add new content get more backward links and with sometime it may turn around. Also if your site is new this could also be part of it, I find sites rate better and more consistantly after 12 months.

The same thing happened to me. I was number 1 on google for a search term for a month. Then, bam, I got knocked down to the second page. What happens is that google will normally make new sites ramked high for a short period of time. Then, as new sites come in, you fall back and have to start the normal climb up the website ranking ladder. I have had this happen a few times actually. You get all excited when you rank great, but it happens to everyone. SEO, SEO, SEO. Thats all I can say to get back up there. And fresh content!

you also have to cosider that you may submit your url to directories too fast.

this is normal... as new articles and pages are added by every site, it will be ranked high for a short period only.

a lot of factors to keep ur page high on top consistently.
    1. domain age
    2. page PR
    3. content relevancy and uniqueness

I've had the same thing happen to one of my sites just recently. It jumped up to #5 in Google and poof, it was dropped. The site's only about 3 months old and that's probably one of the reasons. Just keep working on it and it'll come back.

Some new sites outranked old sites but it will not take long time. Old sites have more advantages than new sites. Domain age is one and probably you have more backlinks than them. SO don't worry about that, just continue to build more links and your site will be back soon in it's position.

Try to analyze the keywords they're targeting and keywords placement on their pages, you'll get an idea, I don't think backlink plays any important role here.

    Excellent reply..i also second that...
Google will take new sites to top for some time

Update that url page with some new content.....rebuild the sitemap...resubmit to G webmaster tools and wait for the results :)
