I am unsure if I want to lease messenger Clients to people so they can start there own there own instant messengers for there dating sites or just launch the messenger myself and hope it gets large.

The messenger now is about 90% complete. The messenger only works on windows ;]

I myself have created a messenger system by using ajax. I will advise you to wait and hope it gets large.

There are so many messengers available to users today, every portal launching its own messengers. But someone should come up with something unique and new to beat the biggies like Yahoo/MSN ;)

Agreed, this won't be easy for you. It would have to be unique, something that incorporates an idea that no one else has used, unless you have $1000000s for advertising...

    Nope, it isn't.

I looked into this myself a few months back to tie in several different websites and concepts. The resources needed from servers to cash was in the $10,000+ range. All depending. I wanted music, chat, and adspace. Kind of like Yahoo.

The money is not an issue. But for me, I have other sites to get launched first. I will come back to it in 2009 once my music network is up.

    Competitive to whom toots?

If you are not trying to BE the next big YM, MS instant messenger, but are going to use it for your own network, or smaller application then there is not all this 'competition' you refer to.

Hopefully you asked Google the same when they started their search engine, and there were already a good half dozen Lycos, Hotbot, Yahoo, MS, and so forth..

    Very true Barefootsies.

If the guy who started Facebook said
"MySpace already has that market, I think I'll pass on my social site"

Well.... internet users wouldn't have Facebook would they?

I say GO FOR IT !!!
Because if you don't someone else will.

Hey, you never know, if your IM get's big enough one of the
big companies may want to purchase it.

Just be different and very creative.

    I don't know...

    Instant Message for the blind...LOL!!!

    Just kidding!!

    hard to get... sorry.
But in this pound there are SHARKs like yahoo and msn; very hard..... even till date skype is grappling.... skype get some good share but a complete hold.

One can kiss the success in this field, when has a unique and rich featured application.
Another point: Sharks are having a great number of developers in their team working 24 hours to improve application..... that means they have good qualified man power.

Now review you self, where do you stand.

But through we must make efforts. Karmas should always be there. i wish you luck mate.

If you listened to people like this...

.... you will NEVER succeed or try any venture.

Luckily, for all of us, life and business typically do not work out that way.
