Time for Microsoft to force people to use IE7?

I was checking my analytical stats and still some 20-30% of internet users are using IE6.

However, only 2% are using Windows 2000 - so there's no excuse why the great majority of IE6 users can't upgrade.

    I know IE7 isn't perfect, but it's a major step up from IE6.

Webdesigners have been playing the "browser compatibility game" for years now - it's about time this became obsolete.

Why doesn't Microsoft force people to download IE7 with the security updates for XP?

Yes, why people stick you IE6 if they have a better option?

Because Microsoft already know if they force IE6 users to download IE7, many of them will change to firefox, opera or other alternate browsers, so the percentage of IE users will drop drastically

There are still lots and lots of apps out there that get broken by IE7 - mostly in Corporate land and if MS forced people to upgrade then they'd break apps that businesses rely on.

Plus when did it ever make sense to force anyone to do anything?

    You mean Firefox? :)

Anyway, part of it is probably that IE7 is buggy. I've had nothing but bad experiences with IE7 every time I have used it.

Should it be Microsoft's responsibility to force users to upgrade to IE7 or should web developers begin to simply block the old IE6 users until they upgrade? No one wants to take the heat on this one.

    No, IE 7 :)

I tried FF 3 for a couple of days, but I wasn't satisfied about some things.

Microsoft is always trying to forcing people to adopt what is convenient for them, not for you necessarily.

IE7 is indeed a major step to avoid you can control your own browser's behavior.

Just today I spent several hours suffering the annoyance of the ivory topbar telling me that I should restore the default settings to "protect me" from "risky" file downloads at its own website or warning me about not visiting my own server because of the SSL that I was trying to setup, hence the error it supposedly detected.

As far as I remember I was not asking Microsoft's protection so luckily I can simple switch to one of my many multi-boot Windows options to choose from IE6, IE5.5, IE.5 and even IE4 and IE3, setup for testing purposes :D

It's not due to the operating system. I bought a windows xp computer from dell 2 months ago and it came with Internet Explorer 6 pre-installed.

    Don't blame it on windows 2000 =p

It would be great for them to force this however there are more and more people switching to mozilla firefox anyway (me included). Might be a waste of time to force it
