    Hello,

I was wondering if one of you guys would know this.

As far as i know to build naturally links to your site you should use many different anchor text, my question is how many would be good?
I have a very competitive niche.
through my google webmaster tools (what googlebot sees)
i can see 28 different keywords, is that enough?
what would be a good number?

Well, if you have to ask, then it's not very natural, is it?

If you are competing in a very competive niche, how the hell is getting
28 different anchors going to help you?

Pick 3 or 4 not so competitive keywords and concentrate on them, it's not quantity traffic as so important as quality traffic. You might only get 10 hits a day and those 10 hits may bring you more money than the 100 hits from traffic that isn't looking for your type of service. It will take a lot longer to break into your niche if you are going after keywords that the whole world is also targeting.

When you do your keyword analysis on Google, search for the keyword terms to get your raw pages competition. Note the number. Then search for your real competition by using the allinanchor Google search filter, like this

    allinanchor:keyword

Note that number too. The smaller the second number the better, and the higher the raw/real combination ratio the better.

Do this for each of your keyword phrases. Use Google Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal) to see if your keywords have a decent number of searches, and medium/low competition. If you can find terms that give

    a) 2,000+ searches per month
    b) low allinanchor total (< 50,000)
    c) medium/low competition

Use these keywords. Focus on pairs of words rather than individual words. Use keyphrases that can also be combined, such as Phrase A + Phrase B, Phrase B + C, Phrase A+B+C, and try to ensure these combinations also have a decent number of searches done (not always possible, but try). Limit your keywords to 20 or less (10 x two word keyphrases but not less than 3x). Optimise your pages for these.

    Put keywords in

    1) Title
    2) Description of Page
    3) Page keywords
    4) Headings
    5) Image Alt Text
    6) Link Text
    7) > 0.5% density in body of page
    8) > 1.0% density in top third of page

    Ensure there are

    1) 500-1000 characters in total in a page
    2) 20-200 characters in the description
    3) 5-20 keywords per page

You should be able to get on Page 1 for your search terms. Bob's your Uncle and Fanny's your Aunt. :)

I recently did an analysis of a site that was #2 for the most competitive keyword in its market and page 1 for many of it secondary keyword markets.

Of 125,000 unique visitors they arrived via 58,000 different keyword searches, the vast majority of which had no inlinks created for them.

The key was lots and lots of content.

Personally, I found that Googles keyword tool is designed more to keep focus on competition...thus keeping the cost of PPC high than a useful tool for focussing link building strategy.

thank you very much for the good info.
if i search with allinanchor:keyword i get around 9 million search results at the moment i am i jump around #40-60 with the best keywords for my niche, but with some keywords that are searched 50-200 times a day i am already in the top 20, i hope i will make this last step to the top been working on this for almost 2 years.

Thank you all for the good feedback:)
